I auditioned the SRH-1840 straight out of the box, and was unsatisfied with the sound, so I decided to give them a period of break-in. Recent scientific studies have shown definite differences...

I didn't think of TEAC when I began searching for a dedicated CD player. My initial short list included Denon, Cambridge, Marantz, Onkyo. The Teac intrigued me, so I went for it. It is very...

I don't think they are. There is nothing on their website. I still think you should just save and get the BX5As.

They have released the CX5's & CX8's http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/StudiophileCX5.html These cost a little more than the BX5A's but are more adjustable & have been given excellent reviews

Wayyy too expensive. >.> I'm looking for something within $100-$200. I'm trying to be strict about the budget because I plan on building a computer in a few months.

Don't hold your breath waiting for that magic M-Audio unicorn.
It's unlikely they'll be releasing a better AV40 any time soon. The current one is doing just fine.
Also don't expect miracles. A 100$ powered speaker can only do so much.
On the other hand you don't seem to know what you really want.
If you want the best sound for your money, there's no question that BX5a is a much better choice.
Everything that AV40 does, the BX5A Deluxe is doing a lot better.
If you want the best value and smallest footprint speaker then AV40 is an obvious choice.
In absolute terms BX5a is not much bigger, but it reality it does require a lot more space and (ideally) speaker stands to really show it's colors.
So ... if you're serious about your speakers and willing to make it work BX5a is one of the best alternatives there is (for the money).
If you just want a quick fix, AV40 is a very good choice.
KJSDFKSJF. I'm so indecisive....
I will make my final decision once christmas comes around.

I'm guinea pig testing the bx5a right now for you NguyenAdam
Not many surprises to report considering how much research I already did on these. These are pretty fat speakers though, and the instructions do recommend 8-12" of space in the back, acoustic optimizations to the room, etc. I've followed none of it. There's maybe 4" in back of the speakers, they're not even ear level with me 100% (little low on the desk). I'm playing techno music right now and I'm actually enjoying them like crazy! I was using the small logitech 2.1 set up before this, and these woofers have more base than the 2.1 subwoofer did! I'm sure it gets better with a subwoofer, but I may be satisfied without it for now. Hopefully this gets even better with break in, and no defective bs!
Been listening for maybe 5 minutes, but so far I got a grin from ear to ear listening to these
