if i use my onboard spdif out to connect DAC what software i need to install?

I am really confused about this asio and wasapi thing

 

do  need to install any of those if i use the spdif from my mainboard?

 

can someone teach me how if i need to ?

Well, first of all that depends if you run MS Windows or not.

* Not running MS Windows - then asio or wasapi is not for you.

* Running MS Windows - if Windows XP, then asio is for you. Windows Vista or 7, then Wasapi is for you.

NO - you do not NEED any of these things !

just set your computers sound to output to digital (control panel, sound, playback tab, "realtek digital output" or whatever your digital out is called) , at a sample rate/bit your dac is good for, and you're done.

 

you don't need wasapi or asio, they are ways for applications like foobar 2k to output sound by by-passing the operating system sound mixer or something and possibly improving the sound quality.
