For USB/DAC/amp, try the Apogee Duet.

I think second-hand is the way to go.

 

If you check out online trading places like eBay I think you might see something very good after a while.

 

I wonder if the Aune has a digital output?

 

You could use the Aune DAC with a much better amp perhaps?

 

Then at some later date upgrade to a better DAC if you wish.

I'll see if the upgraded power supply helps with the Aune, and then go from there.

 

[Added:]  OK, I have come across a bunch of comments that the Audio-gd Sparrow works well with the K701/K702.  Might not be able to avoid trying that one.  :-)

I think with a better amplifier your DT880/250 cans might sound a lot better as well.

 

Looking over these forums I think that often these mid-price headphones are not given good enough amplifiers.

 

Headphones have several massive technical advantages over speakers for resolving detail and so I think that good headphones will always be dependent on very good amplification and source.
