How to not buy a Fake.

Step 1.  Buy from authorised retailer/seller only.

Step 2. Do not ignore step 1.

Step 3. You ignored step1 didn’t you, hoping to get a genuine product at a steal of a price.

Good luck with that. 

Pictures don’t tell you anything, it is easy to grab a file photo from the net.  Price doesn’t really tell you anything; I can sell a fake at $50, $100, $150, in fact any price less than the market price for an original and still pick up some suckers.  In fact I can even sell it at market price as you won’t, be suspicious.  Even feedback can lead you astray, as half the prior buyers don’t know they have bought a fake as they can’t compare to the original.

Go back to step 1. 

I end up cancel my order and bought from sound professional instead, pay 109 buck before shipping fee and then I feel at ease afterward. No more nightmare. (it's not like i have any to begin with LOL)

You google the Brand name and used the words "authorised seller" or "authorised dealer" for you area.  IE Europe.

You think they'll accept a $90 offer/bid on what they priced $159 on? I doubt they'll accept anything lower than $120.

Well obviously many many many of us made the $90 offer to proaudiomart and got it approved within minutes, but that was a good while back. Cant ever hurt to try though, let us know how it works out.

I made a offer saying how others got that deal for 90$ but he said audio technica said the lowest their dealers can go are 124$ so he countered with that. :(

Well jerg was right on the money. His starting price back in the day was a lot lower than it is now. It was at least a year ago I got mine there. They didnt even carry them for a while and now that he has them again it seems he must have paid more this time for them. All that said I still think they are worth $124 shipped. I like mine and I have headphones worth a lot more than that and I think they compare fairly well. At least you know they will be genuine.

Im considering paying the extra 30$ but idk, i wanted to get the same 90$ deal. My local guitar center is sold out of the coiled version.

I'm seeing a bit of comparing of people's ATH-M50s with real headphones to see if they are legit. Can some of you guys take a look at mine and tell me what you think? Some parts of it seem legit but in general they seem fake to me. I would just add my pics to this thread like others have but I don't wanna have to re-add my pictures, and I don't wanna fill this page up with them, so just here's the link to my post. If any of you guys want to check out the fake ATH-M50's and want to do a comparison for the community, FocalPrice has the fakes for $40 shipped.

100% fake dude, such a poor attempt too, the headband just looks totally screwed up, and the pcb on the drivers is green... There's no doubt about it.

I checked mine today. Didn't want to know until now :-)

I've been playing load of music on them by now. Songs I've known for decades now on several systems including some really good ones just gave them away. They didn't cut it. In certain combinations of highs and lows the thing started to hiss a bit. I don't know. When you hear it, you just hear it I guess. So I opened them up and there it was: green circuitboard, no sticker... all plastics. 

They still sound pretty good and on a positive note: I will get me some real ones and they will sound even better than these. Furthermore, headsets are really expensive over here so they are actually quite good value for money. 
 

Still... it's sad the chinese copycats poison the market like this!

The listing advert stated they were Brand New (He was selling 4 of them) and genuine, yet the goods arrived with:-

No warranty card and instructions.

Box is fake photocopy with a faded print that the ink from has bled over the rest of the box.

No velcro fasteners on the front flap of the box.

Print on the headphones ears is too transparent and looks like it could be rubbed off.

The headphones have scratches and dinks in them where they havnt been made properly or have been opened and repaired.

The stitching and stuffing in the headband is of poor quality.

Glue can be seen coming out of the side of the silver rings.
Screw heads have been damaged and you can also see where someone has slipped with a screw driver

The box states 2006 on the rear.

The left ear works intermitently.

I am disgusted to have received this today and have opened a case.

I buy online for convenience, but having to take this all the way to the Post Office to return it and waste my time is hardly convenient.
