Woody Grado Mod (NO LONGER FOR SALE)

My code name for this is Vet Mod.  I bought this Grado from a serviceman serving in Kuwait.

That was before I woodied the rear chamber with a shell whose walls are thicker and whose aperture is wider than that of the RS1.  It was also before I replaced the plastic grill and plastic button with a clear metal screen.  It was before I vented the drivers (to give it better bass) and opened up the HF by removing the grill cloth and quarter-modding the comfies.

I'm asking NO LONGER FOR SALE, $25 of which will be sent back to the serviceman I bought them from.

Bill these are like a twin brother to the ones that you modded for me.

I need to go buy some red electrical tape, looks wicked.

These have SR60 drivers.  I've got a thread about the process I use.  If the iGrado proves you can use the same drivers and get less, these prove you can use the same drivers and get a whole lot more.  I'd stack these up against an unmodded pair of SR225s.

Thanks, man.  I appreciate the kind word.  Working on your cans opened a lot of doors for me.  You have the cans that started with 225 drivers, though when you change out the shells, replace the screens and buttons, damp the magnet backs, vent the drivers, peel off the grill cloth and quarter-mod the comfies, it's funny what you end up with.  I didn't A/B these two but after performing the mod, I couldn't tell the difference - at least not from memory.

Thanks for the kind word about the tape.  I'll send you some.  I think the tape is a good way to immediately tell the difference between the left and right sides without having to turn the cups.

NOTE - I've doubled the rings (temporarily with electrical tape, to be followed up with adhesive).

I go into more detail about why in the SR60 Mod thread.  In brief, while the bass is fuller, it's the sense of space that convinced me the improvement in sound merits the added profile.  I don't know exactly why, but with these larger shells, the music seems less compressed.  Its complexity unfolds.  It feels more holographic.

Bill, I love the low profile look of the first iteration of this mod.  Ugh, I might have cut down the cups that you're sending me??  Not sure if it'd work or not.  I think those cups are quite abit thinner.

Oh, and I'll be trying your SR60 mod as well.  Luckily I kept my 60s that I had up for sale last week.
