Technically with any amp, low gain will have the best sound. That being said, do not worry about it az differences are mostly imperceptible. In the case of the E9/E9K, use whichever gets you closes to 10-12 o clock, which is the amp's sweet spot.

I'm a bit confused, I thought the 770s were suppose to be the bass heavy phones of the 3 line ups. If I read correctly, it seems as if the 990s have the most bass of the 3 line ups according to this review? Am I understanding this correctly?

It is different bass, the 770 has more sub-bass, while the 990 has more mid-bass.

 

Depends on wether you have one of the pro's (bass heavy) or the consumer premium edition (bass light, except for some odd balls floating around).

I'm looking to get either the 770 pro (250) or 990 pro (250). 

I ordered two headphones that were suggested to me in my thread (a900x and dt-770). Still waiting on the 770s to come in but I didn't like the low end on the a900x so those will be going back this weekend. Still trying to track down a place to demo the 990s.

I plan on using them 50% gaming 40% music 10% movies. For gaming I do like a nice sound stage for positional cues but more so, I want a sound that will immerse me in the game.

Music: I listen to a bit of everything depending on my mood but a majority of the time it's hip hop, r&b, and edm.

Which would you recommend between the 770s and 990s. Is there a big enough difference between the headphones for my use to try tracking down the 990s for a demo?

The DT990s are a bassy headphone, I prefer using DT990s over the DT770, unless I have a need to block outside noise.

770/250 is not a bassy phones

770 Pro 80 is. Much more bass presence than the rest. The 990 has more mid bass, but way less bloat, and is much quicker at decay.

I got the 770 pro 250s in yesterday and I'm definitely loving them. I wish they had a little more punch in the mid bass but I guess something has to give in a sub $200 pair of cans.

I'm thinking about picking up a pair of 990s from the guitar center to compare the sounds and make a final decision. Quick question, I find that the 770s are a pretty bright. Definitely something I'm not use to. I'm wondering if the 990s are even worth testing as I heard the highs are extremely bright. Thoughts?

The treble is similar, as both use the same drivers, and neither has the treble filtering disk of the DT880. But the DT990 has more upper mids, because there is no notch at ~3 kHz.

they eq beautifully, you can get as much sub or mid bass out of them as youd like. you can also eq the treble down with the greatest of ease =] i use electriq on foobar and im very pleased

 

Higher gain usually means you'll be amplifying more noise. On the other hand, some circuits/opamps run better at higher gain. 

Yes, TECHNICALLY. In real world practice, it's mostly inaudible. But whatever helps you sleep. I use high gain on most of the amps I have used in fear of accidentally hitting the gain button/switch and causing an explosion of volume to my ear drums. From most of the amos I havebused, the gain hasnt made a noticeable difference in noise, etc.
