I've gone Bayer DT-411s -> Sennheiser HD 500s (both ended up with a dead can).. so kinda looking forward to going back to the Bayer camp.

Hmm, I'm torn between the DT880/600, or the DT990/600. I've had the DT880/32 about a month ago, and it was quite good! I even ran it straight off my MP3. Now, with this "next" Beyer I'm going to get, I'll be pairing it with a nice amp as well, so DT880 is once again a possibility. But, I think I may want to try the DT990, with it's fantastic bass.

Which of the two is more along "Sennheiser" sound? (Big fan of the lush, smooth, and dark sound. I'm also basshead)

Which of the two is more along "Grado" sound? (Not a fan. Way to bright, not to mention just a fatiguing sound overall)

I agree with every single word about the Tesla T1.

I wonder if I'll ever find a Beyer that I'll like. I've had a rather eclectic sampling so far but have always felt let down in some way. Testing was not consistent, but they all ample power from a variety of amps.

990/600 - flabby bottom end, recessed mids

990/250 - high end sibilance turned me off

770/80 - got rid of the shrillness of the 990, but I'm still missing my mids

T50p - a very odd phone that seemed to be both dark and bright at times, nice mids, but manic everything else

48e - cuts like a surgeon's knife; fascinating/revealing to listen to, but not fun at all

Should I even bother hunting down a 880 to try out some day? Or maybe a DT150 or 250?

Hi I'm quite interested in purchasing a beyer headphones in order to try out their sound signature, and now I'm currently deciding between two of them, the DT770/80 and the Dt990/250. I can get the 770 new for 185USD and the DT990 used for around 270USD. Would it be worth it for me to get the DT990s? I like to think of myself as a bass lover and would like a speaker/subwoofer like type of bass (chest thumping bass would be good! ) Also I only own the AD700s and thus would have no grounds for comparison with bass heavy headphones...

Neither sound anything Senns, but if you really stretch it to look for any similarities you can I'd say the 880s since they're the least bright.  The 990s have awesome bass and pair it with an incredible soundstage which is a hard combination to find.  The problem is the highs.  I found them just too piercing and shrill.  Even more than Grados.  Grados ramp up the treble slowly so they're (IMO) bright without being piercing while the DT990s just have a huge peak in the treble.  I loved everything else about the DT990/600s, but the high were more than I could take so I had to let them go.

Do not get the DT990 at that price, those are hugely overpriced IMHO.  If you look around, I'm sure you could find a pair for under $200.  As far as which one you should get, I like both, but find that I use the 990 more than the 770.  I find that I really like the sound of open 'phones in comparison to closed, among other reasons. 

Two things you should consider before making a decision one way or another is 1)  what you are planning to use these for (at home, at school, noisy places, etc.), and 2)  are you planning to amp these headphones at all?

It may also be worth determining how you feel about treble as thats something many people can't stand about the DT990.

I think I like the idea of a pair, but they do seem rather expensive over here in England.

Everything seems rather expensive in England. That's why people in retail call it Treasure Island due to the profits they can make overcharging.

For example a Leben CS-600 cost £4700 in good ol' Blighty. Price Japan is £2382 inc shipping. As they say in the US... Go figure.

It sucks. We get the occasional offer from Play etc, but not very often. They usually only have about 3 of what ever it is in stock, which inevitably are bought by the same person and sold on eBay for £££ profits.

Just reading a post on AVF about someone speccing up a pair of DT880s with champagne anodised parts and a T1 leather headband direct from Beyer. Apparently cost almost £300! I bet they look rather spiffing though.

Just been to the Beyer website and managed to spec up a pair at 379 euros without really trying!

Much cheaper just to buy a standard pair from Hifi headphones.

Well based on the hd600 vs dt990 part of this thread I have bought the dt990 250 ohm premium. hope Zombie_x is the best reviewer in the world, lol!

Just thought I would add that recessed mids are a big plus for some listeners...

Love my DT770-Pro80s!

That is why I think everyone should try out headphones in person as much as possible.

P.S. Interesting comments on the T50s, I have been wondering about them.

My take on the Pro 770 vs 880, the 880 is tilted more towards the treble compared to the 770s. The 880s are stronger in the mid/treble, lighter in the bass. YMMV.
