First, allow me to apologize for resurrecting a thread which is almost 9 months old.

Now, having said that, can someone who knows the answer to Anaxilus's question please chime in here (specifically, the question about the Nano, 6th gen)?

Also, does anyone know for sure when Wolfson stopped making chipsets for the Nano? I read from someone who posted that the 3rd gen Nano had the Wolfson chip, but have also read in other places (here, as well) that it stopped after the 1st or 2nd gen Nano.

Thanks!

I don't know when they stopped making them but I still have a 3G nano and it's the strongest best sounding nano in the lineup IMO.

OK, I hate to sound like a broken record here (and I know everyone gets tired of the usual FOTM argument and debate, to the point of ad nauseum. . .)

But anyway, (nonsupremous) I appreciate your willingness to share you opinions about this. But I have to admit, I am just a little confused. . .because I see back at post #118 of this thread you claimed that the 6th gen was your favorite of the ipod bunch.

Am I missing something here?

If you were to do an A/B test of the 3rd and 6th gen Nanos, which one do you think would win (just on SQ alone, via headphone  jack out)? You know the routine, same EQ settings, same phones, same song, more or less same volume level, just your basic run of the mill side-by-side A/B test.

Ya, the more I listen to them side by side the more I like the 3rd gen the most.  But I use the Rock EQ setting on that 3rd gen ipod and it has a pretty good strong output and delivers far better bass.  If I listen to them both with the EQ off, I think the 6th gen is a little cleaner sounding.  It's not far off, but you know as you listen over a lengthy period of time you get better opinions.  I will say still to this day that the FM tuner on the new nano is of the best I've ever heard on any portable.  It's not an HD tuner, but the clarity of the signal isn't far off.

But anyway, sorry to be confusing on the whole matter.

Oh, it's no problemo. But thanks for clearing that up, though ksc75smile.gif

What was Anaxilus' question again?

I don't have a 3G Nano to compare it with in-depth, but I'll say it again, the 6G Nano has the cleanest output by far of any iPod I've tried, including the much beloved 1st Get Shuffle, the Touch 1-4th gen, iPhone Classic up to iPhone 4, and even the 5.5 Video.

I've gone back to a 4G Nano to pair with the pico slim. The 6G nano sounds very good unamped but I feel lacked to properly drive my custom iem. The 4G Nano with it's somewhat boosted treble and low bass pairs well with the pico slim. It's a synergy thing I guess. My SM3x6 custom has very big bass, bordering on boomy when used with the 6G and the slim and the 4G somewhat enhances the treble with the bass not as overpowering anymore. Still a very portable set-up.

I just bought myself an iPod Nano 6G for to wear as a watch for cycling and walking and I am impressed with the sound quality of this little thing. The bass is crisp and tight the treble is well detailed and the mids are not bad. Also the stereo soundstage is very good. The sound is almost up there with my Sony, Cowon and Rockboxed iPod Video 5G DAPs.

This little sucker really does put out a decent amount of power.  Looking on the Apple website I see no real specs on these units.  Does anyone know what the DAC is and what kind of power it puts out?

It probably uses the Cirrus Logic DAC. The older iPODS used the Wolfson DAD.
