Amperex 1959 EL84 D-Getter Pair in my MG Head! - Page 2

I'ld have to guess that you're right. A pretty good chance that yours are a matched pair. I'm wondering, were they sold as such?

There is a pair on ebay that differ from each other by only the last digit. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=50598

Oh no, I just guaranteed a high closing bid, didn't I?

Yes, mine were sold as a matched pair. Those look incredibly well preserved! One thing to check is the "getter" on top, the desired model of this tube has a "D"-shaped getter. I can't see the getter clearly enough on those eBay photos to make a judgement.

no clue as to it's meaning. Although if I had to guess, I'd say date codes / batch numbers.

Those date codes mean: Philips, Sittard (United Kingdom of the Netherlands or Holland) April, 1959

My pair reads rX3 X8D which is the same as yours only April, 1958

You can Google for "Amperex date codes" or "Philips date codes" and get a lot of links, some helpful and some confusing. Or do a search at audioasylum.com in the Tubes forum.

auction on ebay just ended...$202.50 NOS pair

No, I didn't win.

Would anyone here really be willing to pay that price for these tubes?? It just seems outrageous to me.

Just to warn you dd3mon, I got ahold of a matched pair of really rare early 60s Siemens CCa tubes which I went and had cryo treated. I sold them to another member here, and when one of the tubes died he was so downtrodden that he sold the AMP that ran them. He said that after reaching the pinnacle of sound that those Siemens tubes gave him there was simply no looking back. Vintage tubes like this are simply wonderful to hear, but if your pair goes out your MG Head will never sound the same.

If you find another pair that are for sale, I would reco getting them. don't pay a fortune, but you might not like hearing the amp after getting used to those Amperex tubes.

I don't want this do seem like a thread crap but....

After spending $300 on an mghead and another $300 on NOS tubes, doesn't it feel a little weird knowing that with the money you've just spent, you could have gotten a used RKV which is everything the mghead is with the best tubes and much more, without the tuberolling hassle. Just my opinion. No offense.

I think you're right that paying full price on these items wouldn't make as much sense as just upgrading to a different setup in the first place.

I got my MG Head used for $200 and my Amperex EL84s were free. All my 7062, 7025, 5751, and 12A*7 variants were all free or dirt cheap. dd3mon's EL84 were $80. We're getting good sound on the cheap and can always get our money back or even make a profit if we wanted to make a change. For me personally, paying full price for anything takes away from the thrill of the hunt and diminishes the enjoyment I get from my hobbies.

Does anybody know if these are the D-getter tubes, or if theyre comprobable to them? I just saw them, and jumped at the low BIN price.

I can't tell from the photo since I couldn't see enough of the getter to say. One thing's for sure, these are some old, cintage Amperex tubes, and as such should sound quite nice even if they aren't D getters.

I doubt if those are "D" getters, but for $30 thats still a great deal.

I was just rereading the guy's ad and noticed how he nicely left out how these tubes tested on his checker he popped them into. He talks about how they were in a low watt, rarely used Hammond organ, but unless he owned it how does he know.

Hey, Oogley, make sure to ask the guy what the readings on these tubes were! He said twice he tested them and matched them, but not once did he say what those readings were. I hope they are actually good tubes with a decent life on them. Also noticed he lists no refund as part of his ad.

Not trying to scare you, but please check with this guy and see if he'll tell you what the readings were before sending the money. Then, see if you can have the tubes checked by someone here with a tube checker to verify what he says is true. If they aren't good, leave him a nice, scathing, negative feedback. He obviously checked them, so if they were bad he is a liar and a ripoff artist.
