DAC, Headphone Amp, Both, or new CD Player (With more refined DAC)? What should I do? - Page 2

Good eye.  Yes, I missed those.

The chip set is the Cirrus CS4398 D/A Converter and I'm under the impression that that is two steps down from the Sabre32 ES9018 DAC chip used in the Audio-gd line of DAC's.

What I'll be doing is re-ripping my audio library using Exact Audio Copy (EAC) and in doing so, will then stream from the HDD to the DAC so personally, I won't need a transport.

Thanks for the info!

That's a great price for the SA8004 (749). I've only seen it for 999. It is one of my considerations.

It just came out so not a lot about it yet, but found one excellent review. From the literature, It's a slightly improved SA8003 --which has gotten good reviews.

The 8004 uses the same Cirrus DAC CS4398, but it also has USB in, an improved disk tray, and two digital outputs providing SPDIF irregardless of what comes in on the USB.

I don't know if the SA8003 it would be as musical as the Rega Apollo (Wolfson DAC/$ 999), but the 8003 looks like it is built like a tank.

that's a nice looking converter, made up here in Washington. They have a cheaper model too the DA10 for about 1100.

Do you have one, or have you auditioned one?

I have heard the DA10 which is almost identical performance wise to the DA11 at a local meet and was very impressed.  It was very detailed and neutral, but still retained musicality which many other DACs fail to do.  The DA10 is also very highly regarded by many on head-fi as a solid performer.  I plan to get one myself once funds allow.
