IC: TTVJ 307a

I am considering selling my TTVJ 307a.  I bought it from Todd in March of this year.  This was his own model which he used for his own personal use.  It was also the first 307a which Pete Millett built.  The condition is excellent.  The only blemish which I can find is a very small scratch (about a half-a-centimeter long on the faceplate right above the right  3-pin Balanced connector. This scratch is very hard to see and probably won't show up in photographs. The wood is unmarked and the rest of the amp looks new.  The internal components have all been recently inspected by Pete Millett because I bought a pair of K1000 which were broken but at the time was unsure if it was the amp or headphone.  After testing it was concluded that the headphones were defective.  But meanwhile the amp has been inspected and deemed to be in perfect condition by the builder.

I paid $5000 for this back in March.  Since then I've used it roughly about 100 hours.  I also have 2 pairs of all 4 tubes which go with the amp AND a very awesome pelican case which Todd supplied me with.  The case alone is worth well over $100.

I am considering selling it to upgrade to the Pinnacle, but I have not even heard the Pinnacle yet so this offer may not stay as the 307a is my favorite component in my system.

Should I want to upgrade to the pinnacle, which I will know for sure by the end of next week I will be selling this amp.  I would prefer to stay within the Conus, but if you live elsewhere and are still interested, I will consider a high offer.

Again, this amp is discontinued, but Pete can still repair any future damage for years to come.

Serious inquiries only:-)

So, did you decide to go with the Pinnacle? I also have a 307A and heard the Pinnacle at CanJam. I tried to get Todd to send me the Pinnacle for CanFEST in Charlotte allowing me the opportunity to compare it with my 307A, and let other people experience it. But for whatever reason it didn't work out. No big deal. However, my initial impression of the Pinnacle at CanJam was extremely favorable. It sounded magnificent. I'm just not ready to plunk down 10K without comparing it to what I already have.

Hey Danny B,

There's so many good strengths to both amps....I really wouldn't want to let the 307a go for much less than I paid because it really is worthy of the price, so I'm not in a rush to remove it from my home any time soon.  If someone offered me the $5K I would probably do it, but I'd heavily consider not doing.  I think the 307a is more neutral and more honest.  The Pinnacle is more beautiful and warmer....I preferred the Pinnacle's sound overall, but the 307a is more realistic in many ways so it's hard to just sell it.

It's funny how they're designed by the same person and have a similar inner circuit design but because of some small differences and the major difference of tube selection, they sound incredibly different.

I feel like a worthy comparison of the two amps would be:

307a = Original R10 (bass light)

Pinnacle = Later R10 (bass heavy)

More people prefer the later R10, as do I, but it's not better in every way and both sound very different but have similar characteristics.  Many prefer the original R10, and I think quite a few people on this forum would prefer the 307a to the Pinnacle.

That's interesting and helpful. Thank you for your insights into these two great amps.

PS.

I'd love to test my theory that.. a Bass Heavy R10 though the 307a will sound like a Bass light R10 through a Pinnacle.

That's a study worthy of federal funding. Anyone here well connected with the feds?
