Here's the review with a speaker system (not monitor though).

Somebody really has to make this clear for me:  What setting should I put on Fubar if I am listening exclusively to 44.1/16bit music via usb?   Should I upsample it to 96/24bit?  All of these numbers and terms are a little daunting.

From my experience 

192khz filters = kinda dull, most treble roll off

96khz filters = balance, a tard bit treble roll off

48khz filter = good, least treble roll off

I'm currently using the 96khz filter because on bad recordings, the 48khz filters make cymbals very very painful to listen to . I've noticed some (very subtle) differences when upsampling using optical/coax input; but no differences when upsampling with USB input.

NFB-2/3 perceived treble "roll-off" is not related to sampling frequencies - it is related to oversampling factor.

On NFB-2/3 higher input sampling frequencies dictate lower oversampling (and thus more perceiveable "roll-off" of high frequencies).

So I should upsample to 96?  Because I had heard that the nfb 3.1 automatically upsamples the music and so I'm wondering if I should set up foobar (wasapi) to 96k so it can be bit perfect?

where do you heard that? nfb3 doesnt upsample anything. it does oversampling from the filter.

Filter 3-6-9 => Less treble "roll-off" on my perception . 

Oversampling : use integer 2x , 4x , 8x . Done internaly by DAC

Upsampling : take : 44 khz to 96 khz  , no integers a more complicated operation . Can be done by your audio player etc . 

Filters 1-3 = 2X support up to 192khz files 

Filters 4-6 = 4x supports up to 96khz files

Filters 7-9 = 8x supports up to 48 khz files .

Just got the NFB-3.1 with the DIR90001-chiop installed. Weirdly filters 7,8 and 9 don't work when playing 44,1kHz material from iTunes and Spotify (not sure what the sampling rate from Spotify is..) using the coaxial connection from a V-Link II usb/spdif conerter. Oddly using the optical connection coming from an airport express all filters work. Wondering if I need to return the dac, any ideas?

Check the default sampling rate of your nfb3.1 to see if it's set higher than 48khz. 

If it is then playing audio in shared mode (itunes/browser - anything that's not wasapi/asio) will uses the same sampling rate as the aforementioned default rate, and thus won't work with filter 7 8 9.

No ideas about the airport express since I don't have one

Sorry for a stupid question, but how do I check the default sampling rate...? The default OS X sampling rate is 44.1kHz. I'm using a macbook air, but how can check the default sampling rate of the nfb-3.1?
 

Better wait for someone with a Mac. I never used Mac os before. My reply was based on experience with windows only

I narrowed the problem down to only the coaxial input. Works with fine with usb too.

Mac users - any ideas?

As an update, I'm finding that the C2 is actually an overall improvement when using acss. just seems clean and clear to my ears. I need to do more 1 on 1's so I can figure out which one to sell but I'm reaching for the c-2 a lot more than the c-2c
