any thoughts of just a speaker change , any ideas?

Some speakers of British make perhaps?? - I usually find British speakers to be more laid back and warmer sounding. Check out B&W 600 series, KEF Q series and Mission 700 series. Of the lot, I've found KEF Q series to be the most laid back sounding.

Also might want to check out a Canadian make, the Energy C series. I've listened to the C 1 and was very impressed with its balance - not to laid back but not to aggressive either.

All these series have a range of models starting with small bookshelves at $350 to floor standers of ~$1000.

Good Luck!!

First, thanks for responding to this thread i am new here and not sure how to use this web site for responding to one another, but it's like THE BOOK OF KNOWLEGE for audio,i am on it every day . Getting back to this thread Ticky you must be reading my mind before you posted i bookmarked all those same speakers from the web. The best speaker i ever heard was the B&W801 MATRIX back in the 80's , back then i said some day i will own these , cant imagin anything sounding better, but that was way back then.AUDIOGON has two pair one for auction and the other selling for $1300, also Misson772-B&Wdm580 -dm620 -KEF Q series for $250 , But buying blind i dont know. Anybody do any transactions like this , i guess you have to pay to join the website before you can do anything? Also people here rate PSB very high ,any input to the others and the 801's. THANKS everyone hope to hear from you

I've bought on Audiogon before. As a buyer you only need to register as a user. There is no fee involved. You pay the site a fee when you sell items on it.

My experience using that site had been good so far. But if you are planning to buy a big ticketed item (>$1000), I would suggest some caution. Other than the risk of being defrauded, it is also risky to buy speakers without auditioning them. Despite all the good reviews from others, you, personally, might not like the sound of those speakers. That happened to me before, boy... never again would I buy an audio equipment based on reviews and without first auditioning it.

As for the PSB, I never had a chance to hear them... so I can't help you there.

Just stay away from the Missions; if you are complaining that your current system is bright Missions will accentuate that big time. They (usually) feature a forward sound stage (not necessarily bad, but must be balanced) and your system will probably make it terrible.

I would try listening to your system with the EQ out of the loop.

I think that the generalization that Brittish speaker are relaxed is false. However, it is more often true about their electronics. B&Ws are deffinitely not relaxed. The 800 series very "up front" and has very revealing treble. Most missions aren't terribly relaxed either.

Point taken. I've not listened to all speakers of British makes, nor have I listened to the B&W 800 series.

Perhaps laid back is not the proper term for it. But having listened to several speakers of British makes (Mission, Whafedale, Celestion, B&W 600s, KEF) I find them to be slightly less aggressive then say, Polk, Boston Acoustics, AR.

Whatever it is, I must say I love the sound of those British stuff. Maybe its just psychological.

Also, I had the opportunity to live with the Mission 780 for a week or so. I would say that the sound is airier and brighter than say the KEF Q1. The 780 has a very good vocal balance and might be more neutral than my Celestion As. but at the end of the day, I find the 780s are a bit too airy for my taste.

But, getting back to CrooksCreek's problem:

To tone down an overtly bright system... the KEF might be a good choice. However, it might be a bit too - yes i'll use this term with confidence for KEFs- "laid back" sounding for some taste.

Best thing to do is to audition the speakers.
