DIY: question about building a chassis

My father is in the middle of building two Dynakit MK-III power amps and has already built the custom ST-70 that Bob Latino offers on his website: http://www.tubes4hifi.com/bob. I mentioned to him that I spotted a Beta22 amp board kit at glassjaraudio.com and he offered to build it for me.

My job is, is to pay for everything and build the chassis. The issue I have is I have no experience in building such a thing.

How should I begin?

Wood or metal?

Wood is obviously cheaper and more forgiving.

A bit of both.

You are right about that -- I just found a really nice custom design for the M3. It looks like the front plate is made of plexiglass jt2s4k3w.jpg lal7xrfc.jpg

I could try copy the design.

Very nice! What configuration Beta22 where you thinking? The less boards the smaller the chassis needs be also the Beta22 can be a hummer, are you thinking of putting the transformer into another separate chassis?

Consider ventilation also, they run quite warm/hot.

Yes, it will be in a chassis similar to the one above. To tell the truth, I know nothing about the different configurations out there and what advantages larger configurations bring. Perhaps you could shed some light on this. Until then this Beta22 will remain a two board config (until I figure out what the third board is for.)

About the ventilation... are the openings on the top not sufficient enough? wfeolusi.jpg

apologies for the late reply

Well the configurations are all on AMB’s site, in summary the three main options are 2-channel passive ground (2 boards), active ground (3 boards), and balanced (4 boards). Then you have to decide whether to put the transformer/psu into the same chassis or house it in another enclosure away from the amp boards. The transformer is a electromagnectic interference (EMI) and can cause the amp to hum, unlike the M3 the beta22 is prone to be more problematic in a one chassis build, so be warned.

The advantages of each configuration is up for debate and there is no easy answer. Have a look here under configurations:

As to ventilation, it depends on which configuration your going for, AMB have thermal calculations available, but you’ll have to be more finalised with your parts selection to get a good idea, it’s not as easy as looking at that pic and making a quick decision.

M3s don't run that hot, should be fine.

No, but a β22 in that chassis may run too hot.

I've been quite busy over the past couple of days. I have a few off-topic questions to ask -- well actually just one.

I am still unsure about buying the DIY ß22 just yet. I really want something that can do it all, but what I also want is an amp that can drive the Audez'e LCD-2s (in case I ever get a chance to buy them).  About a month ago I read something on head-fi about the ß22 and the Audez´e LCD-2 headphones not matching well with it. May be opinions have changed but can anyone confirm this?

Perhaps this is too off-topic I will start a new thread for this question.

Not what I thought. It was definitely what I had hoped though.

I look forward to finishing.
