I'm Looking For Some Indie/Alternative/Rock Suggestions

Hi all,

I'm looking to further my musical diversity and would like to start with something easy, with rock. Although I do have Last.fm, because rock is not my "main" genre, I only receive few recommendations.

Although my favorites are spread among many "sounds", I figure I should post quite a few to increase the number of recommendations.

- Incubus

- Metric

- Taking Back Sunday

- Brand New

- Foo Fighters

- Jet

- Jimmy Eat World

- The Black Keys

- Radiohead

- Our Lady Peace/Raine Maida

- Rise Against

I also have recently listened to Lynyrd Skynyrd's first album (spelling his name was enough!) and thoroughly enjoyed it, as well as Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever.

Any recommendations pertaining to any of the artists posted are very much appreciated!

Go pick up a copy of "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" by Wilco. I think you'd enjoy it. Not entirely sure about the rest of Wilco's catalog because it varies. But if you love YHF, it might pull you into the rest of their discs.

An ever growing area of music. Certainly not intended to be an exhaustive list, but "Arcade Fire," "Iron & Wine," "Modest Mouse," "Deerhunter," "Elbow," "Grizzly Bear," "The Magnetic Fields," "Massive Attack," "The National," "Pinback," "Califone (Red Red Meat, oRSo, Sin Ropas, Ugly Casanova...)," "Sparklehorse," "TV On The Radio," "Wilco," and "Yo La Tengo" are certainly some of my multiple album favorites...

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the responses, it's appreciated.

I'm listening to Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot right now. So far, so good! I'm only on track 4, but loved I am trying to break your heart and also really enjoyed Radio cure. I'll look into the other recommendations shortly and post back with my thoughts.

Based on that list, I'd suggest these groups:

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Broken Bells

Dredg

I would second that as a fairly straight up list of starters ... maybe throw in "The Duke Spirit," "Black Mountain," "Alela Diane," all of the "Desert Sessions" volumes (a Josh Homme, yearly collaborative project), "Son Volt," "PJ Harvey," and ... (well that's enough for now) ...

Rock it.

x2 on Arcade Fire, Broken Bells, The National, Massive Attack (start with Mezzanine)

Might also wanna try out Miike Snow, The Arkells, The Juliets (free on bandcamp.com)

Oh...and also, look into thesixtyone.com which I like better tham last.fm. Tons of non-mainstream music!

Check out Menomena,  Elbow, Cloud Cult and Manchester Orchestra while you're at it.

Here's a mixture that might help round it out. Your obviously into more than just indie, so I wanted to include some alternative basics as well.

Alice In Chains

Band of Horses

Deftones

Dinosaur Jr

Interpol

Muse

My Morning Jacket

My Chemical Romance

Nirvana

Perl Jam

Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Shins

Shout Out Louds

Silversun Pickups

Smashing Pumpkins

Soundgarden

Spoon

Stone Temple Pilots

By no means comprehensive, but a start. Yes, they are in alphabetical order, I can't help it.

x3 on Arcade Fire, x2 on Band of Horses and The Shins, and I'll add Phoenix to the growing list.

Bright Eyes - I'm wide awake its morning

Weezer - The green & blue album (refers to the colours of the album covers)

Ryan Adams - Gold

Biffy Clyro - The vertigo of bliss
