I have stax 3050-ii system using bithead/cheapo dvd player. Will a new DAC help?

Hey guys,

Honest objective-as-you-can-be opinions please! I currently own the stax 3050ii system (sr-303/srm-323II) and using either my headroom bithead (using a y cable 1/8"->rca into the srm-323ii) or my cheapo-dvd player rca->rca into the amp. The sound is ok and detailed, but lacking dynamic constrast. I know that stax aren't known for their umph compared to dynamics, but i have the feeling i can get much more from the earspeakers. There's a certain thinness to them and lack of emotion compared to my ad-700's. This could just be the nature of electrostatics to my ears, or it could be the source.  I know the bithead is not good for a dac to the stax. The cheapo dvd player sounds better, but would getting an external DAC rocket me up a ways? I have the feeling that the power, or rather lack of,  from my current sources is part of the problem. I have heard plenty of "stax require great sources" lines, but I'm still skeptical.

I'd appreciate any recommendations as to whether or not a new DAC (was eying the audio gd fun) would help. I usually listen to classical and sometimes rock or jazz.

Thanks in advance
