ESW9 strikes a nice balance between being portable and delivering good sound, have groovy and fun sound signature too, could be bass heavy and thumpy out of the box, require some headband stretching to tame lows down a bit and bring out mids details. I liked them better than D2000 too. Have you considered IEM, I can wholeheartedly recommend Ety ER-4S, not all portables can properly drive them, seems to work fine with Sony X-Walkman, with Zune even maxed out they might not be loud enough.

Looks like im going to back away from the a900s because of the mids. Have you heard the ESW9? Hows it compare in all aspects to the a900?

You can always spike the center of your EQ if you want more mids.

But If the A900 is still a possible choice, I would just go for the A700 instead.

I've read many things that say there is almost no perceived difference between the two.

EDIT: Maybe not. If you want portable use, STAY AWAY from the AT "A" and "AD" series!

Don't worry about the impedance of the HD 25 I II. They will rock with your iPod. Get  'em if isolation and leakage issues are important to you. They sound great too,

Why the a700 over the a900?

Like I stated above, there is almost no perceivable difference between the two. You save yourself almost $150 for sticking with the A700.

I have not tried them, so these aren't my words. But, I have read countless reviews about the two, and almost all of them stated what I just said.

Bringing it back alive, since the search is still ongoing

Like a lot of other people have suggested, I think the HD 25s would run great out of an iPod. plus they are ultra portable.

I wouldn't rule out the HD25II so soon, I heard they have pretty good energy, bass is good, portable, and good for rock.
