Which Headphone Should I Get?

Thread Starter

I need your input on which headphone i should get. This will be perhaps my only headphone purchase for the next 10 years so it has to be an excellent one.

I'm using it for portable and home use so it must have folding abilities and be easily driven by an mp3 player. I'm currently using a cowon D2+. I realize the headphones i'm about to mention are larger than your normal portables (Koss Porta Pro & Sennheiser Px100 as examples).

So far my choice is between the following Audio Technica ATH-M50 Studio Monitor, Sony MDR V6 Studio Monitor and the Sony MDR7506. These are all easily driven by a portable device and foldable.

I'm looking for a headphone with neutral sound. No enhanced stuff of any kind. Whatever is on my Cowon D2+ is exactly what i wanna hear.

Also since this will be perhaps my only headphone purchase i don't mind spending a little more and getting something better if someone knows of a headphone please mention it besides the ones i mentioned.

Thank You All For Your Help.

Another headphone you should consider is the Sony MDR-7509HD. It folds up and is easily driven like the V6/7506, but is Sony's top-of-the-line pro headphone. I've owned a pair for a bit over a year and use them regularly when I travel. I find them mostly neutral and enjoy them a lot, but the HD-800 usually wins out at home.

Since you're near NYC, I think that you'd be able to try out a pair at the B&H showroom. Go give them a listen and see what you think.
