Well it certainly sounds fine.  I can listen to radio too!

I just fed it totally dead sound and I hear a very, very small amount of noise.  Not even as much as an onboard sound card.

Do all headphone amps do this to an extent?  Would I get much of an improvement by having a real headphone amp?

All audio equipment has a certain noise floor that you're going to hear if you turn the gain up all the way.  But if you can't hear it at normal listening levels than it's probably not going to get much better.

By the way, I just ordered some 702s and I bought a Millett Hybrid MiniMAX to power them (uDAC source).  Got my fingers crossed on this combo.

I read the manual again.  Turns out the frequency response isn't 50hz-20khz.  The line in has a frequency response of 20hz-100khz.  The 50hz-20khz is just the control section for the harmonic distortion measurement.

Wait, it even has a built in Baxandall circuit!  I know a lot of AV receivers do, but I really like the sound of a good old Baxandall filter.  Much better than digital EQs in my opinion.
