Do dedicated DACs have problems with audio lag?

In general, do external DACs experience any kind of audio lag/delay?

I experience a small measure of lag with my Onkyo 805 (~47ms) when using its DAC (through SPDIF/HDMI/toslink). It is noticeable during certain types of usage, such as monitoring a microphone and music games (ie Rock Band). The onkyo maybe a special case as it's dac is connected to an Audyssey chip that adjust timings and such for room correction, but I just want to make sure that headphone dacs don't suffer from the same audio lag.

I assume most of you use your DACs primarly for music listening, so delays aren't a big deal, but it does to me as I will be using it for many other things.

Never experienced this with my headphone or speaker systems watching movies. Forgot the explanation but as far as I know this is really more of an HT issue, though I dunno if sending audio and video through the same HDMI cable gets around it, but I've encountered it mostly when the player is connected directly to the TV/projector. Haven't had any problems with lag with my EAD-DSP1000, DAC-AH, and Icon Mobile.
