Koss UR55 Question about ear pads

Hi folks!  Just joined here.  I've been checking out your forums and reviews for a little bit, and decided to join.  Looks like a great site.   I was looking for a nice set of inexpensive portable headphones that sounded great and were comfy too.  I liked my wife's Porto-Pros, but decided to get the UR55's as I read some good reviews and comments here.  Best Buy was so noisy that I really couldn't make heads or tails of the demo models even with my Sony Walkman MP3 maxed out (no preamp yet either).  Long story short, I checked their return policy and decided to buy them and test them at home comparing them with my AKG K240's, Senn. HD280's and wife's Koss Porto-Pro's, and it dawned on me that the ear cushions on the UR55's don't seem to come off as far as I can tell.  Foam breaks down over time I know, and I'm curious what does one do when these ear pads need replacing on this model?

The sound of these cans are quite nice I must say!  Not as vastly spacious and precise as my AKG's, but a little more lively for certain styles of music and more 'present' for lack of a better way of putting it.  They are a tad tight and push my glasses a bit, but not too bad.  Anyway, what do you folks know about the ear pads on these guys?

Thanks!!!

I have some sitting next to me and I can't figure out how to remove the pads also. I think they may not be user replaceable. It almost looks like you may need to slide a thin knife in between the cracks surrounding the plastic where the earpads are. If you work your way around it should pop off, but i'm not sure of this. Probably not worth trying until the foam actually goes bad. You may want to email Koss on this though.

These are some really good headphones and it's too bad more people haven't checked them out. If you like them, the Koss Pro DJ 100 has a similar sound signature and is even better. I listened to them last night for 5 hours straight until 6am! I actually hooked them up to my old Cowon iaudio 7 with an amp and that thing's sound quality even impressed me more then my Ipod Touch. I actually upgraded to the Pro DJ 100 from the UR-55 and the pads are very easy to replace. Oh and I also finally got my RE0 to sound good, but some instruments still sound a bit "off".

It's kind of frustrating that nobody else has reviewed my favorite headphone. Not even the UR-55 yet.

Hi and thanks for the reply!  I was a little afraid of these being non-user replaceable ear pads once I got them home, thought I would ask though.  I'm really enjoying them though.  I let them break in a bit by running an internet jazz station through them all night and they have opened up nicely - lively and spacious and seem pretty tight in the right places.  I would hate for the ear pads to be cause for a return to Best Buy, but I hat that they might not be serviceable in this regard.  I will contact Koss to be sure.  Never thought about contacting them myself.

I had read a couple of threads on here before joining up and liked your thorough comments, felt like giving the a try - so far, I really like them a lot soundwise.  Just need to consider the ear pad issue and get used to the slightly tighter fit.  By no means are they as tight and heavy as my HD280's!  Those are a bit of a bear, and I have a small head too!  The HD280's are great for tracking when you don't want mic bleed though (I'm a musician), but I don't like using them for enjoyment.  These Koss UR55 and the AkG's are much more enjoyable.

OK, folks.  So I contacted Koss directly and this is the email they sent to me:

"Thank you for contacting Koss Stereophones.

To remove the cushions you would just need to peel it off. The replacement cushions come with an adhesive that will attached the new cushions. "

This is great news for UR55 owners who were concerned about the longevity of their headphones.

As I've been using these headphones, they are getting more comfortable, though I need a break every other LP, and the sonics seem to be more open and extended than even what they were before.  I really enjoy these.  They are a lot of fun!

Does anyone know of other Koss cans that have similar or the the same ear pads?
