Hello from Wisconsin

Hi, this is my first post here. Can someone tell me the difference between a headphone amp such as the Little Dot and a regular stereo preamp such as an old Dynaco Pas? Also, if one of these little headphone amps is a hybrid with rca ins and outs does it use the tube section of the unit?

Hi and greeting from Milwaukee!!

I noticed you posted this in the wrong forum, but no biggie.

Well headphone amps are specially tailored to power headphones of course. Most headphones have higher impedance/spl/sensitivity ratings than speakers as well, and as such need different power requirements. I believe headphones could be harder to drive but this is one area where my knowledge is seriously lacking.

Um I'm not too good at explaining the differences here so maybe someone else can chime in.

Geetings fellow cheez head.

I guess I'm asking if these gizmos can be used as a preamp, in general. I'm thinking about a Little Dot III or Xiang Sheng. Possibly an Indeed V2.

I don't believe they have pre-outs, but you could use the headphone output as a pre-out.
