Winamp Q...

Is this normal? I am running Winamp 2.81 on a machine I have setup specifically for doing audio work. Also running Soundforge with CD Architech & Equalizer plugins.

The machine itself runs WinME on an Athlon 750 / 512 Ram / 60GB. It is fitted with a Guilletmot ISIS soundcard with an offboard breakout box that includes an electrical and optical S/PDIF. I'm running a mid 90's QED Digit DAC from the Electrical out.

When I move the volume slider on Winamp it changes the volume from the DAC. I thought that the digital outputs were supposed to be at a constant level

The Winamp "volume control" controls the "wave volume" in the sound panel, not the "Main", if you adjust the main it won't affect the volume of the output (unless it's at zero, then it'll be nil output).

Check which output plugin you're using (Options/Preferences/Output). Then click "Configure" and see if "Alt setting method (slow") is checked. If so, uncheck it if you want to disable the WinAMP volume control. This method simply uses digital attenuation, as far as I know (and probably not very good quality... likely you're losing the quieter parts of the music).

Thanks guys, i've now got a constant level output from my S/PDIF.

Believe it or not, i'm listening to music straight out the back of the DAC (using a 2 x Phono to 3.5mm jack adapter). Next step is to build a CMOY to connnect to this.
