Sony Walkman NWZ-X1061 A new battery is $276.85 ! ! !

My battery is fading on my 32 gig player.  Too much use I guess after a year.

Their online repair cost is through their "Exchange Program" and is $276.85 plus tax, and this is for a refurbished one and to "expect some cosmetic blemishes."  Lordy!

There is no exchange nor repair after 7 years per their site.  Even after one year, it seems they want you to throw it out and buy a new one.  I can't believe that they are giving out refurbs at $276 each "with blems" where a retailer probably pays that price for a new one.

Totally wacked!

That's pretty appalling. Not even Apple has that kind of response for a battery exchange (though they do charge for refurb units for other out of warranty repairs.) Maybe you can take it apart, source a new or third party battery and put it in yourself? From vague memory the X series uses screws?

wow that is crazy....even more crazy taht the battery needs to be replaced just after a year...

Makes me glad I sold mine, as Sony is turning out to still be the monster they always were.

Now that is insane

Maybe if you call them again and speak to someone else, they will give you a lower price. it works for airlines

Once I broke my LCD screen on my sony and brought it to a repair center. At first they said sony warranty doesnt cover the LCD, but they will try to send the request in anyway. to my surprise, sony approved and i saved $100+

Sounds like Sony alright.  I inquired about a set of replacement earpads.  The pads alone were more than a new set of phones.

I had a TV I needed repaired, a damaged LCD screen that was delivered like that, but unknown as it was a gift - still boxed. I called Sony and they wanted $500 to repair the screen, and I also called a local Sony authorized repair center - same price. They actually suggested I buy another Sony TV, I went w/3 other brands around the house instead.

Ouch, I guess I was just extremely lucky with my mp3 player LCD screen

With experiences like that, I can understand why people get pissed at sony

That's a shame really. It's one of the reasons that pushes me towards Apple gadgets. You can change a battery without a problem for 59 bucks.

I agree, and it's a shame really. Sony will, IMO, never reclaim the "Walkman" greatness that they once owned.

This is the common practice that FRU are just so damn expensive. For example, if you will order e.g. a replacement motherboard for your laptop from IBM, it will cost more than the new laptop itself.

If that happens to mine I'll just open it up and put in a 3rd party or whatever else fits.

Or I'll just throw the X away. I probably won't buy another Sony - and I'll never buy another Cowon - so I guess I'll stick with Samsung and Sansa.

Naiveté, naiveté, how cool it is.

Well, I can afford to buy whatever I want, but I won't be ripped off - if the battery in mine starts to fail around November - after a year - I'll not get another Sony and I'll tell them why.

I prefer small-form players, anyway.

Save yourself the misery and just skip Samsung as well.  Don't learn the hard way.
