At your pricepoint I would reccomend the Shure SRH440s. These have an excellent soundstage for a closed can. They can be had brand new for around $100 in the USA.

If closed isn't absolutely necessary then nothing will beat the AD700s at that price point for classical music and sound stage.

Thanks guys.  I have a list of headphones I would buy, but it would be cheaper to get them slightly used. So whatever you've got, I'm interested in.  Definitely looking for closed cans.  Can't listen to open headphones in a library (I've never actually had a pair)...or can I?

Yep definitely go with the SRH440s.

or he could get the A700...which is a closed version of the AD700.

A700 sounds more darker than the SRH440, sound IMHO not as good for classical as the more balanced SRH440.

SRH440 is also more cheaper, in Australia anyways.
