Well if the FR is still flat (and relatively similar), realistically the detail could only come from a quicker/more precise driver instead of FR manipulation (right?). So, in a sense it would be increased detail in its purest form which, if you have good recordings, should hopefully lead to better overall sound :P.

I would be very happy for Sony to pull something like this off.

LCD-2 might be just what you want though, and I know you have been waiting a long time for your new headphone. D7000 -> HD 800, T1 and now the LCD-2 and the Sonys... the choices never seem to end which is both good and horrid.

You like the faithfulness of a flat FR, but would like a better soundstaging and more detail. Seems to me the LCD-2 is exactly that -> extremely quick driver, very flat FR and excellent imaging. Hopefully you can audition a pair sometime soon.

My thoughts exactly.  This "let's make our headphones more exclusive and expensive for no reason" is getting kind of old.

Sure sony could could make it fancier looking.  They could throw darts at the periodic table to decide what to plate the thing with, (If someone actually does this I'm rooting for Francium!) but it serves no purpose other than stroking someone's ego.  If sony can make a world class sounding headphone that substantially undercuts the competition because it looks plain, then who wouldn't be for it?

They look like 150$ headphones.If you shop around you can get the top denons for the same price.

As much as I love my D7000s, I would love to hear these new Sony's to make such a statement. But you're right...man those Denon's look amazing! (And they sound very good too.)

No fair comparing the D7000's street price to the Z1000's MSRP.  You'll be able to shop around for the sonys as well, at least after they've been on the market for a few months or so.

Don't forget distortion (or lack of).

And I like how they look. Speaking purely of visuals, the HD 800 looks like a toy next to this.

I'm not a Senn fanboy but calling the HD800 a toy makes me wonder what you think the K1000 looks like.

Of all the headphones I've owned and heard...none look more serious and sound as technically proficient as the HD800s.

I never commented on the sound the the HD 800. I've never heard it. But I have seen many, many photos of it. It doesn't look like a pair of headphones. It looks like a piece of headgear from a sci-fi robot. Again, I'm speaking purely in terms of the visual semantic it gives. Some have grown to like it. I have not.

The Z1000 looks like a pair of headphones. Hell, the K 1000 looks like a pair of speakers strapped to someone's head, hence the term earspeaker. (although, its execution could have been much more tasteful)

The HD800 looks like something off the set of the original Star Trek.  I kinda like that look, but its not for everyone.
