Well if the FR is still flat (and relatively similar), realistically the detail could only come from a quicker/more precise driver instead of FR manipulation (right?). So, in a sense it would be increased detail in its purest form which, if you have good recordings, should hopefully lead to better overall sound :P.
I would be very happy for Sony to pull something like this off.
LCD-2 might be just what you want though, and I know you have been waiting a long time for your new headphone. D7000 -> HD 800, T1 and now the LCD-2 and the Sonys... the choices never seem to end which is both good and horrid.
You like the faithfulness of a flat FR, but would like a better soundstaging and more detail. Seems to me the LCD-2 is exactly that -> extremely quick driver, very flat FR and excellent imaging. Hopefully you can audition a pair sometime soon.
