not meant to be a philisophical question and i'm not on an acid trip. but the thought did come to me.

A headphone is something on your head that produces sounds meant for your ears.

It's a telephone that's strapped to your head, so you can make hands-free calls and always be available... DUH.

ah, yes and no in a way.

 

what would the church call them if you had a driven pair back in the dark ages? ....before you were burnt at the stake for heresy bit?

The church would have burnt you at the stake for any number of things, so a pair of headphones would have been the least of my concerns.

 

Maybe the better question is why they're called headphones and not headspeakers?
