What innovations have apple made in portable audio?

New iPod Nano is tempting but 16GB is just isn't going to cut it at all. Considering the 64GB iPod Touch but I don't want something that huge. 4 iPod Nanos is an overkill. APPLE. INCREASE THE NANO CAPACITY!

Then no other MP3 players have really innovated either then. Transistor to push audio in basically the same way.

Anyways the clickwheel does however have something to do with portable audio.

im waiting for the new classic to be released!

I don't think it'd be that difficult to use.  I had a cowon d2.  my how i wish it was as responsive as apple's touchscreens.  i might get one just for shnitz and giggles.  i think it's a great formfactor, especially with a clip on the back.  but we'll have to see how useful it is when someone puts a proper review up.

I'm afraid you'll have a long wait - there's no new classic on the horizon. @160gb I my take the plunge myself tho, LAME V~0 can eventually take up a decent amount of space on a portable if your a file hoarder - LIKE ME!!!

Now, I'm the one that doesn't understand. You're saying if a product exists the market for that product must exist? A lot of failed companies may disagree with you. As mentioned by others since your post, there were several products for sale prior to the 1G iPod. This makes the point of the iPod introduction before/after change. The argument used to be customers bought iPods because they didn't know there were [sometimes arguably better] alternatives. Yes, alternatives and anyone who walked into an electronic store (there were only a few Apple stores at the time), had to pass other choices, usually much cheaper or much larger capacity, to buy the iPod. Where I live, San Francisco, alternatives were far more stocked at more locations (including Creative owned Cambridge Soundworks), but sales were extremely low and public perception remained nearly non-existent outside niche audio circles. The iPod product (and yes, Apple advertising) changed all that. A gigantic market was born, traditional audio publications started to take notice, corporations started scrambling for accessories, Creative lawyers patented mobile folders, people started asking is this the "new Walkman," two channel audio got its mojo back, websites like this one grew and headphone sales exploded. Hell, my Nexus One is the way it is partially because of the iPod.

As for "Apple policy," unintentional line-outs, and the relationship between Rockbox and physical docks [errrrrrr???], now you're just being silly.

I still have my Diamond Rio sitting a box full of PC components somewhere.  Apple wasn't even on the map then and barely had a pulse as a company.  I think they were probably pushing the Newton at that time.  I also had an Intel DAP w/ a built in amp that came out later, still w/ no iPod in sight.

I'm glad Apple did such a beautiful redesign on the Nano and included a clip only to make it a rhomboid screen which negates every new design advancement.  I'm so glad I can count on Apple to do something stupid to ensure I wont go back to their product lineup.  Though it is shiny and has an Apple logo on it which makes up for everything.

Blessingx is right about Apple's place in growing the market to what it is today.  Not unlike what Monster is doing for Headphones?!

I thought the comparison was Bose.  Anyway, the Senn/Stax/AT/Grado/Ety/etc. landscape before Monster isn't exactly the same as the Diamond Rio/Samsung/Hango/Creative/etc. landscape before Apple.

The new Touch is a sweet upgrade from the last one. Put my pre-order for the 32gb and really can't wait to play around with it.
