Just got this in: two new earphones that are currently pre-ordered out in Japan but can be ordered via Musica Acoustics, an import shop located in Tokyo. I'll be reviewing both units later this month and then retiring (maybe, maybe not).

I'll get more info up tomorrow, but for now, my review: FI-BA-SB and A1 is up at TouchMyApps

More information about the FA-BA-SB and A1 at TouchMyApps

Retiring from reviewing iems? Didn't you post on head-fi while on your honeymoon? If you remember, I compared you and your wife to characters from Nostromo by Joseph Conrad. Read it and then let me know if my characterization was accurate!

May I ask what your day job is?

Retiring meaning doing things like earbuds. I will have to read Nostromo as I have no idea about the characters. I think I may have posted whilst out on my honeymoon, but I don't remember. I had internet once, so I probably used it.

My day job is about to change perhaps, so that isn't easily answered at the moment, but it involves English.

No, over there it's Engrish.    Hope you had a nice honeymoon!  Only gets worse from there....

J/K, sort of.

I see, so you'll be spending all your time learning a new language and therefore unable to review earphones?

Best fortune to you on your new vocation.

I actually think shigzeo means he probably *teaches* English in Korea. Or *was*. Hehe...

No, I don't teach English or really care to, but my job is either writing English textbooks (no, really!) or setting up student/teacher transactions. It is fun fun fun (not).

Well, anyway, these are in and are... amazing. Okay, so Final Audio haven't learned how to BUILD a great earphone that matches their sound yet, but... the higher end version (SB) is reasonably made, but both sound amazing. Imagine a large and well detailed bottom end like the Ortofon with just a little less sibilance up top. Space? yes. The combination of open design, wide mouth output, and soft (very soft) rubber flanges is perfect. The SA version has a horrible cable and the SB is only okay-good, but overall, the two are amazing and quite a bit off the beaten path started by their 1601 series.

I love the 1601, but it is a very tailored sound, one that needs either the contour of the Voyager, or a very good and overdone EQ - then it sounds amazing. These need nothing to sound great.

I wonder how similar are these to the much pricier FI-BA-SS. BTW have you read my review? I suspect I might end up ordering one of them to find out.

I did read your review and loved it. Unless I steal a pair, I doubt I'll ever hear the SS-BA-SS version. I'll be putting more comments up.

Again, cable on the A1 is bad - worse than I expected. The SB version has a better cable. Neither's filters can be removed safely.

Apart from that, it is just good, good sound!

^ Thanks shigzeo, tbo I really don't know what it is about FAD and cables. Their engineer's attention span only seems to last out the housing design. Anyway, I decided to take a short cut and ordered the FI-BA-SB from MAJ. Had to act quickly, because I'll be going abroad for some time. But I will post at least a short comparison to the SS version as soon as they are here.

As for hearing the FI-BA-SS version, if your retirement regulations permit we'll work something out when I'm back.

I did see some pictures of the cables from your FI-BA-SS. At those prices they should be better than the AT CK10/CK100 cables and be replaceable, be bullet proof, crush proof and impossible for body oils to crack the cable.

FAD's prices are another matter altogether and while some may hate them, I have no problem. I think FAD differentiate themselves a lot like certain car manufacturers do. The entire earphone business is built on exact price/performance issue. Users are bottom feeders in that they always look for best for a certain dollar. While that is hard to answer, of course, finding what you want is as esoteric a research as anything, often expunging brand loyalty.

When I go to the bike shop, the shop manager is the same way. He says: "your next bike will be a Trek." I don't want a Trek. If I had to get an all-carbon made-in-taiwan-just-like-the-rest-of-them bicycle, I'd get a Taiwanese brand like Giant. I chose a very special Canadian manufacturer, Marinoni, who specialise in custom steel. It is overall about 500$ more expensive than a similar Giant or 400$ more than a Trek. But it's hand made and what I really want.

So the whole (for that price, it should be...) price/performance story about FAD earphones I laugh at. They want their image, not a cut-and-dried puzzle fit niche to determine their products. That said, their cables are poor, though the SB model isn't bad.

The A1 and SB models are in line with other competitor's prices, but still come out at the 'expensive' end for single balanced armatures. The extra money, if all you want is the best penny-pinching performance, would probably be better spent on a Sennheiser MX500. I really enjoy what FAD do and this time, other than the cable, I feel they got the formula right.

James, I may come out of retirement!

i might get a pair soon

I've not listened to the SB version. I assume they use very similar drivers, but Brass is harder to work with than aluminium. It is also physically harder and may give different echo characteristics, but I've not yet listened to it. I am basing my comments on the A1 alone as of now - amazing earphone.
