In any case, I have found there is a variation in tube construction that effects the sound. Perhaps you did get a bad pair.

Hmm ... Oh well, that shows you the variation in Millett-type tubes.  It's unfortunate that they are so inconsistent.  It's one of the reasons that I suggest that people try several, because you can get the total gamut - bad to absolutely great.  It's one reason why there are some out there who totally deride a Millett Hybrid/MAX/MiniMAX/etc.  One pair of tubes, a short listen, and they think they know all they need to know about an amp - NOT!  Heck, half the time the not-so-favorable opinions are formed, the tubes were probably not even biased correctly!  There are people who've had Millett Hybrids for years, done tube rolling the whole time, and never touched the trimmer screws.

In any event, I've always preferred the GE versions of 12AE6's above all else - but that's my personal opinion, of course.  I trust Jake that he knows what he likes, but that maybe shows you that the inconsistentcy is real and that you need to try a bunch of tubes before coming to a final conclusion.  People think that they're like opamps - every one identical, but instead, every one was probably hand-made to a certain extent and the result is that they're all different.  Jake is absolutely right that certain constructions can display certain traits statistically, but I think it's a shallow bell curve rather than a steep one.

That looks like a side getter tung-sol.  The ones I have I thought were strongest on bass, okay on mids and fine on the highs.

I am a sylvania man myself. I am currently running a set of side getters that have the best midrange I have ever heard in a millett tube regardless of musical context. Unbelievably good. I just happened to stumble on them. The bass and highs are good, do not get me wrong, but, the mids, well, they are in another league. Caused me to set my favorite halo getters to the side for the past few months.

I think I have another set of GE 12AE6 I have not tried, I think I have to give them another chance. Like TomB said, they really vary more than one would expect. The vast majority are at least good to excellent with a few clunkers here and there. Everyone once and a while though, you stumble on the spectacular. It is just so hard to pull the current set out as they sound oh so good!!

Sorry to hi-jack your thread basementdweller. Since you are building both anyway, I feel less guilty ;-)  I look forward to hearing your comparisons between both amp!

Not hijacked at all...now it just makes it easier for me to find a thread concerning tube selection :)

I have a whole box of millet tubes that run the gamut, and I ended up settling on a pair of Sylvania side getters in my Millet Max. I've been using them for well over a year and have stopped rolling tubes in that amp altogether because the mids sound so great.

I didn't extensively tube roll like some have, but I had a set of Sylvania 12FK6 that were just superb.
