Finally give up on IEMs, any portable headphone recommendation

I just had enough of IEMs, there are just not for me. I would like a portable headphone! I used to use the Westone UM1 and seek to find one headphone of better or equal isolation, I dunno if its just me/my canal but even when I use the deeper Comply ones, they don't isolate much, especially the heavy, deep background noise of railways. For that type of sound, I find noise-canceling headphones to cancel that very well, since they are my primary noise. I understand that noise canceling headphone are receiving many big praises here, but even some of them good and worth it?

If not noise canceling, I'm looking at the usual Sennheiser HD280, Audio-Technica m-50, Sony MDR-V600. How do these compare to the isolation provided by IEMs or noise canceling?

Trying to keep the cost under $100 USD, cause I just bought an expensive AKG headphone for home use XD

Thanks a dozen.

Sound like you need to get a custom fit IEM...

he won't get customs or even reshells at <$100... but perhaps he can try one of those $15 DIY custom projects?

agree with above posters, maybe try a DIY custom tip. Otherwise the only headphone I'd consider for portable and isolation is the HD-25

thanks for all your replies but by $15 diy custom tips do you mean mixing 2 chemicals, putting it in your ear, let it stand for 10 min and make a hole for the earphone to past through? That sounds rather scary to me.

Try the Etymotic ER6i or ER4P/S. If those don't have enough isolation for you, no iem will.

I just ordered a pair of the Audio-Technica ATH-EW9 clip-on headphones.  I love the look of them and truly hate IEM's.  Check them out if you get a chance.  They were $129.

EW9's a beautiful headphone but doesn't isolate...

ER6i's a earplug which does not fit me at all.

Seriously, are noise cancelling headphones that bad?

Senn's HD 25's bit expensive for me sigh

You're going to have make some compromise, I'm assuming the one thing you won't is your budget. In that case, I'm assuming you have around ~$100. Within this range, it's  difficult to find a portable headphone that isolates well and has good quality, and even more so with a noise cancelling headphone (the $$ is spent on the noise cancelling technology over SQ).
