Bryston Speaker Selector w/ Headphone Output

Not sure WHERE is the best place to post a question like this ... I have a Bryston speaker selector unit with a headphone output:

Bryston Selector

This obviously takes the signel from the speaker terminals of the main speaker amplifier and sends it to the headphone output.

My question is, how would this type of headphone connection compare to a dedicated headphone amp??  Currently using Grado SR60's but would like to step up to something more refined.  Would this type of amplification for phones work with most/all higher end models of phones??

thx!

Attention HE5LE HE6 owners then - this is a terrific product.  Depends on the output impedance - it should be OK with 300ohm to 600ohm cans - but not sure about low ohm Grados and other cans - how does it sound to you?

There were a lot of questions posted to the Bryston rep regarding no having headphone output on their amps - he recommended the resistor from speaker terminal solution - I guess this is what came of it.  Bryston is a high quality Canadian manufacturer with bullet proof gear.  Their amps have, what, a 25 year warranty!

Sounds good BUT I have no experience with a dedicated headphone amp so not sure if I may be missing anything significant with the Bryston selector.  Maybe one of these days I will buy a head amp and compare.

The Bryston piece IS expensive.  The 3 speaker unit is $620 through AudioAdvisor however if you can find one on eBay or AudiogoN they can be CHEAP.  I think I paid $150 on eBay for the 3 speaker unit.

My only criticism of it pretains to its use as a speaker selector - the terminals are too tighly spaced to easily accomodate spades ... bananas are almost a must.  If they would have just made the chassis larger, it would be perfect for its intended use in all situations.
