Yep, agree. And 580 has better soundstage as well.

My sister's cousin's 3 year old nephew says that ultrasones are the best thing evar.  Must be so.

My dentist's friend's dog always salivates more when his owner is listening to Grados.  Must mean the M50's are overrated.

Lol. Yep. Salivation is always the key to determining headphone quality. A thin drool means it's no good, but a nice think hearty hangin' from the chin drool means you got something good.

I don't know, the SR-60 is possibly a bit overrated to me, in the sub $100 category. Of the few other headphones I heard in that category, the SR-60 was my least favourite. Now, I haven't heard every can in that range obviously, but all I'm saying is out of the four or five I've heard the SR-60 was my least favourite. Which I know, isn't saying much. But with the way it was raved about on here, at least a few years ago, you might have thought it was the greatest sub $100 can. Which, it may or may not be, depending on who you are.

 

In fact, odd to see the K240 Studio mentioned up a couple posts. This was the headphone that re-ignited my headphone passion. When I heard these compared to the SR-60 I had for the years before, I knew there was so much better. To me the K240 was superior in every way to the SR-60, except maybe tightness of bass. That's just me though, just my opinion.

I edit because I saw the other comments have rolled in. To be clear of where my comment is pointed at, I wanted to quote obobskivich's comment.. and that's kind of a tedious task once you've already made the comment. I'm not going to say I don't know how.. never! tongue.gif

 

Also, I didn't think the argument was really worth carrying on. My logic was just about to go full circle four times -- I was pretty much writing the same thing over and over. After all, it wasn't a dire discussion anyway. I didn't want to be rude by insisting I'm right, either. No good in getting into other people's whiskers just to pursue a hobby.

Gotta love the way virtually any thread that strays into 'likes and dislikes' rapidly turns into a Grado-bashing epic. Some here really need to get a new act - the old one is looking awfully tired. If you dont like Grado, dont buy them - problem solved.

I'd like to clarify that I wasn't bashing Grado in my post at all. In fact, I've only heard the SR-60, so for me to bash the company would be silly. I'd love to get my mitts on some more Grados. I was just referring to how it appeared to be for the SR-60 at the time, to me at least.

All Grados ever produced past and present sound the same. Once you've heard SR60, there is no need to border with the rest of them. It is far better to play around with ear pads to improve the sound. Put a pair of Jumbo pads on SR60 and they will sound similar to PS1000 with wide soundstage. Another good trick is to put some duct tape around the bowl pads and put them on SR60. You get the PS1 sound right there. How about the Sennheiser 414 yellow pad with a hole in the middle (quarter mod)? They do magic. Trust me, I own them all and did the above simple mods. They work.

It is far better to treat Grado headphones as a base for DIY mod project rather than a finished product. Put them in exotic wood cups and you can end up with different much better looking and sounding headphones than even the most expensive Grado. After all, that is mostly what they do in Grado labs ( using the same drivers and change the cables; cups etc...) to produce so many (too many) different models- Why pay a fortune for the over priced headphones when you can do the work easily yourself?

pcf - I know this is getting off-topic, but I'm intrigued by your last post.

 

I started out with MS1is, heavily modded them - and have actually ended up with a FWJ 325i (transplanted drivers, iroko full jacket).  Anyway - I love the sound - but have often wondered if it is actually worth while going further up the ladder (RS1i).  With your own cans - did you ever try the 325's in a wood jacket, and did it come close to a RS1i?
