Most overrated headphones? - Page 4

Amazon.com is NOT an european website definitively. It's an american online shop.

Those examples are NOT valid, because they are in USD not in Euros, so let me show you how both models retail in Europe.

First example: Here in dv247.com, that is a british online shop:

http://www.dv247.com/headphones/audio-technica-ath-m50s-studio-monitor-headphones--66956

http://www.dv247.com/headphones/shure-srh840-reference-studio-headphones--65717

As you can see, the Audio-Technica ATH-M50s is 3 pounds more expensive than the Shure SRH840.

Other example: In Amazon.de, that is a german online shop:

http://www.amazon.de/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50-Kopfhörer-Headphone/dp/B000ULAP4U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=ce-de&qid=1283234251&sr=8-1

http://www.amazon.de/Shure-SRH840-E-SRH-840/dp/B002N1V7OM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1283234263&sr=8-1

The Shure SRH840 is slightly more expensive, less than 10€, than the Audio-Technica ATH-M50.

Third example: In Amazon.co.uk, another british online shop:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50-Headphones-ear-cup/dp/B000ULAP4U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1283234416&sr=8-1

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shure-SRH840-Professional-Monitoring-Headphones/dp/B002E3IWQK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1283234432&sr=8-1

Again the Audio-Technica ATH-M50 is more expensive than the Shure SRH840.

I think that is enough with three examples, but I can post some more is someone is still sceptic about the similarities in the price. So with these 3 examples you can see that the prices for Europe for the Audio-Technica ATH-M50 are considerably higher than in the USA and because of that, the Audio-Technica ATH-M50 and the Shure SRH840 cost more or less the same.

Yep, it really depends on where you live for value.

You already covered the european price discrepancy, you seem late to your own discussion.  My post, if you read closer, was a response to another American.

There are people that sleep and have a life after any forum dude and here we have a different timezone. My post was to show how varies the pricing in USA and Europe, but with no special dedication or attention to you.

Koss Porta Pros.  They're recommended all over the place so I bought a pair to play around with since they're so cheap and they have little detail, a small soundstage and overwhelming bass that distorts the mids and highs.  I just really dislike them.  I've tried amping them as well with no success.

The most overrated headphone is...

Whatever one that is new this month and has everyone talking about it.

I remember saying this alone in another thread three years ago. People would almost kill me saying it was the wrongest wrong they had ever read and the K701 is oh boy a reference headphone. Now it's kind of obviousness to some that the K701 is overrated. But, given its new price in EU I think it's a fair deal.

Well it costs about 500AUD = 450USD new here.

I think the reason that the Koss Porta Pro is apparently overrated is because of it's uber cheap price....but obviously there is a performance/cost element at play here.....and the reason that the Koss PP is 'overrated' is because it's one of the best headphones going for that kind of money, simple as that, and so a LOT of people buy that headphone - myself included - and they think wow these are awesome for how cheap they are. And that's true because you can easily pay double that and get a worse sounding headphone. In fact I have, twice. Which would be my fault but that's not the point. The point is with the Koss PP (and Senn PX100) for the money they're asking, you get more quality and bang for the buck and THAT is why many, many people rate them so highly because those headphones pretty much are the definition of cheap and cheerful. So if we are not taking price into consideration whatsoever (which I don't see how you cannot) then yes they are overrated in one sense, but to be perfectly honest it's ALL relative. By much the same token there's a LOT of people who refuse to pay over X amount of money for any headphone no matter how good it is....so again it's all relative and it differs from person to person. My point is that the Koss is fantastic value for it's cost especially when you look at what double money tends to bring. But are they up to Senn 595 standards or above ? Highly unlikely - but at the same time they are simply not $100 headphones and that's in large part why they're rated so highly.

My opinion.

Nah the PortaPro's are not overrated..build quality maybe, but they sound lovely for their price...so cheap they are practically free.

Saying the PP's are overrated is like saying the beatles are overrated...not sure where I'm going with that..

Edit:

Actually the PP's are the case study example of the trend:-

1. It's good

2. it's cheap (or value for money),

3. lots of people buy it

4. it gets too popular

5. backlash begins

6. its then 'overrated'...

Happens with everything, Microsft, Apple, etcetc.

Have we concluded the 'winner' is the AKG 701/2?

Even free, I thought, to my ears, the PortaPro sounded bad. I didn't find one redeeming quality to them. I felt they were little better than the drawer full of cheap junk I had before I discovered Head-Fi.

My first headphone revelation was the Grado SR-80. I tried the PP (I had them when they first came out but didn't remember them) after I had the Grado and was severely disappointed. I just think they're overrated.

Porta Pros are sh*ts!!! PX100 are much better! It's truth that most people recommend Portas, but they have really bad bass & all... PX100 aren't maybe any good for audiophiles, but in their price range they are very good portable heads IMHO.
