Heyl I like those carpet earmuffs :)

Maybe 701s are built with plastic but at least their design wasn't borrowed from this:

Haha, well the carpet earmuffs were quite comfy..... if you like lying on the floor. =)

I quite liked my metal from recycled bus-stop in Adelaide, Australia headphones.

and yeha, k701 design is borrowed from an astronaut.

maybe a robot sitting at that bus-stop wearing the SA5k would be a good picture?

Agreed! I read that review and after I got a pair of k702's I wondered if he just made it up. Absolutely no relation to how they sounded to me. Actually, a lot of these reviews are total BS. I have bought a number of pieces of equipment that were raves in Stereophile, Absolute Sound, 6 moons, etc. only to find they had major flaws that were downplayed.

Couldn't disagree more. Hell, barely anyone even has them, where are you seeing them getting overrated?

The K70x on the other hand...

Nothing personal. Just can't hear the music through them...

Panasonic RP-HJE900 > Shure SE425 > Fischer Audio DBA-02

Best IEM for the money (so far) Phonak Audéo. I take them over Westone 4...

I nearly threw up of the distortion and the attempt to reproduce music.. Did I miss the sarcasm or was it that you only just looked at them? :)

I'm not sure if I should say that the Denon ah-d1100 is overrated or just overpriced when you consider that the creative aurvana live! is a same factory same driver clone. Maybe I mean to say that they are overrated as a result of being overpriced. A lot of higher end denon haters out there say that the d1100 is the best of the denon line (I haven't heard the 2k, 5k, or 7k so I can't speak to that) and a lot of satisfied d1100 owners consider it their best closed can. But, when you consider that the live! is the same driver in a very similar housing, you can easily apply partial markl mods and recable the live! for less than the difference in price and still wind up with what is in my opinion a vastly superior headphone having compared the two.

I see a lot of AKG K70X hate popping up in this thread, which doesn't really surprise me. I wouldn't say that I auditioned them on the best possible amp for the comparison (Creek OBH-21 SE) but they definitely didn't sound like a mid-fi contender at all, even against the W1000x which I also didn't particularly like.

The top ultrasones have never impressed me either, and I'd also say that the HD-800 is probably a little overrated now but only because the T1 exists.

Audio Technica AD900, sure its nice and airy, but its horrible. It sounds really hollow and lifeless, and even congested.

Are you stating this of the Edition 9 exclusively?  Because the Edition 8 is clear as a bell. (never heard the 9)  What's wrong with the 8 and how long did you own it for?

Overpriced, yes.  Overrated no on the Edition 8. ;)

I'll echo the sentiments of the K701 being overrated.  I've read impressions of the 702 and Q versions having a bit more low end presence which does sound intriguing, but the 701 was just so... boring.  Dry, distanced, disjointed, uninvolving, and utterly lifeless.  You can tell what AKG was going for with them, but they just turned out so unappealing in my opinion.  Great comfort, bad everything else.
