Audeze LCD-2 Impressions Thread - Page 97

Yeah, diminishing returns are pretty much unavoidable at this price range. It's more about paying a premium to get a little closer to audio perfection.

IMO I think the HD 800 sounds slightly artificial and sharp in comparison to the LCD-2s, which I thought were more organic and rich. They're quite different headphones, possibly for different purposes. Sadly I only got to hear the 2s for like 10 minutes...

As for selling them, no worries, do whatever feels comfortable to you. I gotta admit it's a good deal though redface.gif

I think my LCD3s are at least 50% better than my 2.2s were and they sounded pretty good. Extremely happy with these phones so far prolly around 300 hours on them give or take. Definitely worth the extra money. Not quite as dark and more detail plus better staging.

50%? That's probably the biggest acclaimed difference so far amongst the other hundred owners or so that went from the 2's to the 3's.

Maybe it means 25% better, 75% more expensive = difference of 50%?

No I meant what I said I think the 3s were that much better for my ears. I really did not care for the overly dark sound of the 2r2 phones and the sometimes "muddiness" of the mid to lower bass I heard plus the lack of a sound stage. My LCD3 sound somewhat more airy and not as dark which to my ears are just so much better. I am hearing better detail and better treble as well. I was very concerned about spending the extra money and finding they were only a little better but when I got them and started really doing critical listening I was happily surprised to find that they far exceeded my expectations. Aside from stats I would have to say these phones are just about as close to perfect for me as they could be. So to me yes they are at least a 50% improvement which may not be that way at all for anyone else. I liked my 2r2s but I love my 3s. And they are so worth the extra money IMHO.

The 3s are darker. By measurements and also subjective impressions. Unless you're talking about treble extension and not raw energy in the upper-midrange/treble. But yes by the usual definition of "darker" the 3s are darker than the LCD-2 unless there has been a Rev 2 for the LCD-3s.

There is absolutely no possible way I could describe the LCD3 as darker sounding than my LCD2.2 were. To my ears the LCD3 is clearly shifted up a notch towards treble and is considerably more airy with better sound stage and detailing. Still tremendous punchy bass -but- also more detail in the mids with beautifully replicated treble response. So much more enjoyable overall (for me) than were the LCD2.2s. Not that they were not good phones (they are) just that the 3s are everything I wanted from the 2r2s. Unfortunately have to shell out 100% more green to get 50% more performance but guess that's just the way it goes... But 3s darker? Have to respectfully disagree on that one personally. May have a little to do with amp and dac but overall just cannot go with darker 3s sorry...

LCD3s are darker than LCD2.2, as in they (the 3s) seem to have less energy in the low~mid treble. However LCD3s are tuned to have a huge spike in the upper treble which IMO is a stroke of genius, because it basically gives airiness without raising anything else in the upper side of the frequency spectrum.

It's very apparent with measurements.

+1

LCD-3 darker but more treble. anyways yeah i think the LCD-3 are way  better than LCD-2 cause of the soundstage and air. however, they also don't have as much midbass and have a more smooth laid-back sound vs. the more forward sounding LCD-2

On the comfort front, I have been using my LCD-2 for a couple weeks now and I feel like I am getting used to them.  I thought the weight vs. HE-400 would be hard to deal with, but due to the superior headband on LCD-2 (its both wider and more well padded) it doesn't hurt the top of my head as much.  It does kind of clamp more, but the pads fit so nicely on your head that it isn't really unpleasant.  The only part of me that feels the weight is my neck, whch does take some getting used to.  Still not 100% there, but I think these are keepers for me.

A huge treble spike... when put that way, the LCD3 is not so tempting....

The key is that it is completely in the upper treble (past 12kHz) though, so to your ears it'll just sound like sparkles, rather than spike.

Some might call the sparkle a bit artificial-sounding though, since it is so discontinuous with the rest of the treble. It's just like "dark gooey smooth treble but SPARKLES FOR DAYS BAM".

A lot of people say the HD650 and the LCD-2 have similar sounds. What do you guys think of this view? Personally, I felt that the 2s were less thick and velvety. The 650s were warmer and a bit congested IMO.

yes thats basically what i think.

the HD 650 and LCD-2 are very similar, but the LCD-2 is not as colored, its dark but not as warm and syrupy, its faster and has better bass. they still sound quite similar and i feel most people would consider the LCD-2 a sort of upgrade to the HD 650

Always nice to see someone share your thoughts in this subjective hobby tongue.gif

Agreed. They are pretty similar though not identical, and I'd also consider the LCD-2 a good upgrade for HD 650 users. Just a little more treble and I think it'd be perfection!
