Looking for a new sound system, 700 usd budget

Ok guys, im absolutely new to this speaker thing, i've been mostly using headphones/iems.

Ok so currently im using bose companion 3 series 2 (bought them cheap from a friend)

ok so i've got some newb questions

i read in a few threads that you can get the speakers first, then purcahse a decent subwoofer?

ok so will it work if i just get 2 good speakers (700 usd budget) then connect them to the bose subwoofers?

i find the subwoofers okay because im using them on a computer, but god damn the other 2 speakers suck

i listen to alot of genres of music, however frequently listen to trance, hiphop and pop.

cheers

acutally is a b&w mm1 good for my needs? or is there anything better then that for my price range. i will be putting them on a table , next to my laptop

I suppose your looking for active speakers only

[edit]... I've heard the b&w mm1 at an Apple store. not bad sounding - sort of polite sounding speakers - not for use to rock the room. also overpriced imo.

other choices

lenni, can you advise me on whats the "sweet spot" to spend for such speakers?(around how much?) what do you mean about the b&w? too loud for the room?

oh and just to also state, i have a little dot mk3 amp coming in, if it helps..? i m also using a udac 2 connected from my laptop.

would it be advisable to do this : laptop->udac->littledot preamp-> speakers?

because i plan to use my headphones laptop->udac->littledot headphone amp->headphoens

should i do the same for speakers? i heard double amping is not advisable

not advisable to use a headphone amp to drive speakers. best to use it exclusively with headphones.

the only other active speakers I heard in that price range are the Focal CMS 40, which are pretty good. the Swan M200MkIII may also be a good choice.

but mine are mere suggestions; it's best always to audition the speakers yourself.

another option is to go with passive speakers, but you'll need a dedicate amp to drive them. you could find a good deal for $700 on the used market at Audiogon.

Do you have room for full size tower speakers?

xxatolxx

i don't think i've the space for full size tower speakers, i plan to use them with my laptop and place them on my desk.

i think the swan m200mk2 might be too big. any speakers smaller then that without much compromise on sound?

others seem to like the Tekton's speakers.

Tektons are fantastic check out the ob4.5's those are probably the best sounding speakers under 1000.  You coud power them with a 100$ t-amp or nice low powered tube amp.

Will the ob4-5 work well with my little dot mk3? or shld i grt a t-amp.im sorry but can those two speakers connect to my subwoofer?

A pair of used Adam A7 would be very nice if you're into a flat sounding sound signature like the K1000.

No that is only a headphone amp you need a speaker amp. Get a t-amp it would be the best bang for your buck. What kind of subwoofer is it passive or does it have a built-in amp?
