I'm expecting delivery of two of the more buzzed-about new phones on the market, the flashy Phiaton MS400 and the astute and retro-looking Fischer Audio FA-004br. I've been using quality studio monitor phones for many years. About 5 years ago the Alessandro MS-1 kind of opened my ears to more colorful sonics, although I do use them often in the recording studio because of the comfort. Then about 2 years ago I purchased a pair of Denon AH-D1001b just out of curiosity and they have become a real favorite. I love the engaging SQ and the great comfort. I can wear these for hours with little or no fatigue. I know the Denons are not for everyone but they are pretty incredible sounding to me at the price. I've yet to invest in a truly expensive pair of audiophile phones although when I take that plunge I will surely consult these forums.
It just so happens that I wanted to get a nice pair of reasonably portable phones for my GF's birthday. She does a lot of listening in her cube at work. So, they needed to be closed and obviously will not be driven by an amp. I felt that the Phiatons were a cool choice and ordered them. Of course in my research I inevitably put together my own wish list. The FA-004 were near the top of that list just for the bang-for-buck potential. I also personally like the look and they are supposedly comfortable. I'm very curious to see how each of these stack up against the Denons and the MS-1. I wont bother to compare them to my reference/monitor phones. I suppose I will let her try each of them and choose what she prefers. Nice guy, huh? Well, I'll be keeping one of them and that's never a bad thing.
I will post my review here in a few days.
If anyone has any thoughts on any of the headphones mentioned here or has any other favorite or sleeper sub-$200 headphones they care to recommend or comment on, please do!
