University Speaker Conundrum - Sound Stage Issues

Thread Starter

Yes, it's another one of those "dorm room speaker" questions.  Hey, you guys are the best: expect to get a lot of questions .

I was looking at the M-Audio AV40s and liked everything I read except that the soundstage (if this is the right terminology) is fairly narrow.  IE, you're missing out on a lot unless you're in a certain spot.  The thing is that if I'm going to be in one place I'd just as soon use my headphones.  I'm looking for something that will be good for general room listening.

I'm open to suggestions up to the USD180 mark (~GBP150, but speakers are overpriced in the UK).  Because I'm buying in the UK, if any Brits are about and want to recommend a good online store besides amazon, feel free.

I was considering:

Acoustic Energy AEGO M 2.1s

AV40s (obviously)

Logitec Z-2300s

Harman Kardon Soundsticks II

Of course, what I'd really like is a proper 2.1 system like Bx5as with a woofer, but travel and wallet size forbids it.  *Sigh*

Any thoughts?

the Aego M always gets a good write up but when i was looking for similar ish i went with the Audica MPS-1, if you hunt it may still be available for within your price range.  of the two i dare say if you want more bass go with the Aego M

haven't heard any of the other speakers listed, but I've heard the Soundsticks II at an Apple store. they may look nice on the desktop... but if SQ is your preference - don't do it! one good thing to use those Soundsticks would be to use them to beat the people who made them (j/k). they're truly awful.

another suggestion... other than a recommendation:
- Monitor Audio BR1
- Tannoy Mercury F1 Custom
both can be found for around £100/pair, new.  also check out Richer Sounds clearance. you can find a half-decent amp for around £50. that'd leave the rest for speaker & interconnect wire.
I cannot personally recommend RS as the only thing I purchase from RS was a new DacMagic, whom they're the sole vendors. they've also a branch in your town.

if your soundcard as a s/pdif out, I guess you could connect it directly to the amp; otherwise you may need some sort of dac interface between the pc and amp.

oh btw seeing as your in town. there are  few shops in town that may do things to interest you, the most well known of which on here would be amp3 http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/ they also have a little shop in Ocean Terminal (the shopping centre down Leith where the Royal yacht Britannia is in case your just new in town)

for the others you should be able to find by just googleing
