Over the last month I have decided to get rid of my headphones and get a nice set of speakers/studio monitors for my new iMac. I just don't enjoy

headphones nowhere as much as I do my speakers. All my content is coming from my new 21.5" iMac. iTunes music, Movies, etc what speakers

should I go with for around $300. I have been looking at Audioengine series even though I have never owned/heard a set before. I want a 2.0 /2.1 setup

please no surround sound. I mainly listen to rock and hip hop for music. I also watch some movies as well. Thanks for any input

The Swan M200MkII may be also a good choice. as always is best to audition speakers beforehand, if possible.

Those look amazing! I was already looking at some of the lower end offerings but didn't realize the M200MKII were under $300. Looks like they start shipping

again beginning of next month. Thanks for the heads up Lenni!

I've gone thru many headphones, yet I've always considered my Tekton 4.1 the standard for the way things should sound naturally. You'll need to purchase a seperate amp, a cheap T-amp works well

I highly recommend the Swans M200. I have had the MKI for a long time, and at the time of the original M200, they were very well regarded. I still haven't seen active desktops that offer the same quality of sound. I have read that the MKII changed the sound signature a bit with the more powerful amplifier. Some said it made the the top end more forward by comparison, but I doubt you could go wrong with the MKII for the price. The MKIII seem to have been available for a while, but I haven't heard them or read anything comparing them to the previous models. The price is pretty steep for the MKIII given that it shares the same drivers as the MKI and MKII and only upgrades the amplifier section, but they'll fill a big room better and perhaps be more dynamic with more power behind them. I enjoy the Swans sound and also run the 6.1 fronts, 2.1 as surrounds, and C3 center in my home theater system.

How do the Swan D1080MkII 08 for $169 compare to the Swan M200MkII that I was looking at? They look better but is the sound also better? They are a $100 more.

Watch Ebay & Craig's list for PSB Alphas.  You'll need an amp or receiver, but that's not as critical as the speakers in this price range IMO.

Just got some KRK rokit 6 active monitors and love them. They are on sale at my local guitar center for $300 as a pair. Been listening to them for the past 3 days, all genres, and have not really found any fault or complaint yet. Front ports so I have more room on my cramped desk, surprisingly good bass (thought I would have to add a sub before I set them up), and just good fun sound overall. And this is all from a Creative X-fi currently, still waiting on my dac to come in......any day now....

I read somewhere that the Swans MK III had a tube style sound. I think I read it in a review in 6moons site, not sure though. However for the money they seem to be very good speakers. I have a pair of Infinity Classia bookshelf which I think they are about the same price and they sound decent.
