Having some problems with my MacBook Pro setup...looking for some suggestions.

Hello everyone, I figured this was the best place to ask for advice on some issues I have been having lately. I few years ago I purchased a USB Mbox 2 for some basic home recording in my spare time. It worked well for what I needed it for, but I am now having some issues with it. I recently got a new MacBook Pro (2.66 i7 unibody) and have been having trouble with the Mbox ever since.

At the moment, I am solely using the Mbox to run audio to two powered Fostex monitors via 1/4" input cables. I think the issue has to partially do with the MBox not receiving enough power from the USB port on the laptop when I have other items plugged into the second USB port. My computer keeps giving me kernel panics and freezing up whenever I try to play audio.

Therefore I am looking into purchasing a DAC to use with the MBP. Given the power issues I believe I'm having, would you recommend I get something that has it's own power source? The Fostex monitors also have RCA inputs as well if those would work better. I have been looking at the headamp pico but that would REALLY be stretching my budget so I was wondering if anyone had some cheaper suggestions that would work well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, I highly encourage you to buy a DAC with its own power supply.

The limitation of the power output through USB from your MacBook Pro most likely restrict the DACs performance. Especially when all you receive are kernel panics...

Since you mention the HeadAmp Pico is stretching your budget, perhaps something by iBasso would be a smarter choice?

Since my question seems to partially line up with the OP's, could you make any recommendations for powered USB hubs please?

Thx.

I actually went out last night and got a cheap powered USB hub and so far it seems to be working quite well. I definitely want to upgrade to a dedicated DAC at some point but I'd like to save up some more money first. Thanks for the suggestion!

On my original MacBookPro (early 2008 vintage I think) I found the USB ports to be very underpowered, and could not run several USB drives from it.  Worse if you are running anything on the other port (usually a mouse for me).  A powered hub will help a lot.  My newer one (april 2010) is much better in that regard.

I never had trouble with a Predator or a DACPort running on it though.  Don't know much about the MBox either to be able to compare.

I'd have to agree with Krmathis.
