Starting a new hobby and possible career need advice

Hi new to the forum. In fact this is my first post. Basically I am going to start learning how to produce music. My real goal is to produce hip-hop beats, mix tapes, that sort of thing. I have been playing the drums for over 20 years and have always been extremely into music. So the creativity aspect doesn't really worry me. Its the software/hardware that i need to learn. I am wondering if there is anyone on the forum that would have experience with this field. I have some experience with music producing software but not nearly enough to decide on a set up.

Basically I am looking for suggestions on a set up that will allow me to do the things I want to do. I know I will need a laptop and software programs that will allow me to create samples as well as programs that actually put them together to create music such as Audition and Audiomulch. However I know nothing about which software is the best for starting out (cost). Also would most likely want turn tables and a mixer as well as a keyboard. I also already have a Roland V-Drums kit that I would also like to use as well. How do you hook these up to your laptop? How do you record them to your computer? These are the things I have no clue how to do. Sorry if I sound like a newb but I would like suggestions from people in this field that know what they're talking about before I spend a bunch of money on equipment.

Thanks for the info,

You'll need a MIDI interface to control from and record to a computer. If you get a Mac computer Apple includes an introductory program, Garage Band. Apple also offers Logic Studio, for when you need a more professional solution. IMO, if you are just starting out you will spend less time learning and more time doing if you get a Mac.

Get ready for the anti-Mac (PC) side of things...

My only response is that if PC users decided to use what they had and customized the frikken controls, then the PC experience would mimic the Mac. That is all.
