More like Etta James?

Just started getting into this genre (Jazz-Blues?)-want to learn a little bit more about the greats.

Would Billie Holiday, Ella Fitgerald and Sarah Vaughns all be put in this category too?

I know nothing about any of the above but I love this style (whatever it is).

Is there a Best of CD that will introduce me to all of the greats in this genre?

Dusty Springfield? Esther Phillips?

Can you pinpoint what it is about the Etta James you've heard that moves you? The thing about the great vocalists of that period is they're all pretty singular, so is it her voice in particular or the overall sound that you're responding to? If it's the jazziness of her blues sensibility, I'd say try Dinah Washington next.

Great question.

The only song I have ever heard of hers is Stormy Weather-and I love it. The violins, the jazzy fee (is this jazz?)l...and of course, her voice. The whole things is just incredibly soothing.

Ive always wanted to get into the classic female singers of the past; I happen to love Ella Fitgeralds voice as well.

I have no idea where to start. What genre is this?

If there a greatestt hits?

Nina Simone deserves mention, and Etta Jones if you can find her. Barbara Morrison is great and just put out a new cd a year or two ago.

Peggy Lee

Billie Holiday

Keely Hazel (mostly sang with Louis Prima)

Blossom Dearie

Ella Johnson

Sister Rosetta Tharpe (mostly gospel, obviously)

Carrie Smith

LaVern Baker

Alberta Hunter

Ruth Brown

Anita O'Day

Lillian Armstrong

etc.

Etta James, for me, is primarily a blues singer and I really adore her Chess recording. If you like her jazzier stuff though, think I would second tru blu's recommendation of Dinah Washington.
