5.1 external USB Sound card. Do suggest.

Hi folks,

Wonderful information that iam gathering from this forum. Hat's off to all those experts here.


This is my first post.
I am looking forward to buy the Creative Sound Blaster x-fi 5.1 surround usb sound card.


My rig:
Laptop  : Toshiba (A205-S5823)
Speakers: AudioEngine 2 (powered)
Headphones: Philips SBC HL 140 headphones/ Sennheiser CX300
Requirement: Only for movies

 

I would like to know whether it is worth to buy this usb sound card. Can i get the 5.1 effect when using either this A2 or headphones? (I know this 5.1 is virtual sound and no way near to the actual 5.1 speakers. But for time being would like to use this, if its worth to invest on the same.)

 

If this external usb sound card is not good, do let me know the alternative. My budget is max US$120. (Do provide the links or online shopping to buy the alternate sound card)

 

Do let me know.

If you get a Creative product, make sure they have drivers for Vista or Win7 if you're running those. Beta deosn't count. Never could get my Xfi USB to work right in those OS's.

Thanks Mootan13. I have Win XP. So i suppose that should not be a problem. Iam only looking into how would it perform? Will it really give the 5.1 virtual sound?

I don't believe the sound blaster has virtual surround sound. It's intended for true surround sound using speakers (L/R front, L/R rear, and sub outputs). You might want to look into something that has Dolby Headphone or something of that type, such as the Asus Xonar U1.
