I own both. IMHO The T1 needs an OTL amp to shine, then it outperforms the X (which I also like very much).

I'm looking at buying HD800s, possibly to go with my T1s or possibly to replace them (shocking, I know!)

Can any members with both tell me when/why the reach for the HD800s over T1s and vice versa?

Hi Lachlan - just one person's take - but I had the chance to compare both recently ......

While I miss the HD800 and probably will own it someday, it has made me appreciate the T1 a lot more.  I'm listening to it right now (and still amazed at the clarity and vividness of the presentation).

I do. I had the T1 first - T1/WA2. Then I bought the HD800. My T1 is being fixed soon but then I will sell it. I much prefer the HD800.

The T1 is a brilliant headphone but I listen to mostly acoustic/jazz these days and prefer the HD800's bigger sounsstage.

Also the T1's are not as comfortable on my head - they squash my big ears up a bit. I wish they were bigger so that my ears wouldn't touch the drivers at all.

All in all the T1 and HD800 are more similar to each other than not apart from the soundstage and bass.

I am looking for a complete opposite sound sig than HD800 so im thinking of getting an Audeze headphone

Thanks Brooko - reading now...

Interesting as I currently have LCD 2 and T1s which is why I am considering letting the T1s go in favour of the slightly leaner HD800s as a contrast to the LCDs

Great review, mate (as always)!!

I think you might have just tipped me over the edge to part with my beloved T1s :(...

...but what's the bet I'll re-buy a pair one day!? ;)

Funny thing is that while really enjoyed the HD800 as an all rounder, I'm still in two minds.  Whilst the two are very much alike, there is a vividness and clarity to the T1 on my system that the HD800 doesn't quite reach. I suspect that maybe my DAC and amp could be the limiting factor.  But as I genuinely enjoyed both headphones on my system - I can't really see me upgrading source and amps for a while yet.

I have the same issue you have though.  The dilemma is that the two are more alike than different.  And the more I heard the HD800, the more I appreciated the T1.  But I suspect if I had the HD800, I may not listen to the T1 as much.  But then if I sold the T1 - I would miss it.

I think Rizki was in the same dilemma.  he sold his T1's (to me), kept the HD800s, and now he misses the T1.

You can't win sometimes ......

Now I'm torn again...

Truth be told, I am torn between getting the LCD-2, or the T1 (again). The K812 would have to go, that's for sure, but what is going to be the replacement? Time will tell..

I especially love the sound of drum percussion on the T1. I somehow like to focus on drums with the T1, and guitar, specifically sound of acoustic guitar strings on the HD800. Naturally, being a guitarist I am when I had both I preferred the HD800. But now that it is gone, I missed it, and I am pretty certain I won't miss the K812 as to me, apart from holographic vocals presentation the HD800 does everything better than the K812.

For me, listening to Dire Straits makes me wonder why I need the T1 to complement the HD800, but listening to Genesis makes me miss the T1 again. So I guess it is true, sometimes you simply cannot win...

Only way is to see if you can borrow one (an HD800) for a week, and test them side by side on your own gear.

Does A2A have a demo unit they load out, or any of the Melbourne Head-Fiers you know that would part with an HD800 for a 5-7 day period? Maybe reciprocate later by loaning them your T1 for similar time period?

Don't make any decisions until I get to hear the K812!

If I really like it, I might make you an offer on a trade - especially if it sits between the HD800 and T1.

Don't worry mate, I'm not rushing into any decision :D

I'll send it to you, and your X5 tomorrow, mate. Enjoy!

I think I'm prepared to bite the bullet and see. I have a perfect setup for HD800s with the X-Sabre (slightly warmer than neutral DAC) and Bottlehead Mainline. Doc from Bottlehead is an HD800 fan with his Mainline and I certainly trust his taste, plus I've auditioned HD800s at length recently and really liked what I heard

EDIT: doesn't mean I won't REALLY miss the T1s potentially though

Might get to Melbourne at some stage to visit my sister next year. I'll bring the beer if you don't mind a kiwi auditioning your Bottlehead gear

I'll welcome you with open arms (so to speak - no hugs if that kind of stuff makes you uncomfortable )
