But you are also right about the volume. I'm sure HDP is not doing the T1 justice, because its not a particularly good sound piece of equipment. I remember a noticeable step down in sound quality when I compared my old Asus Essence ST to HDP.

That's it right there, it's hard to find a cheap amp that can push decent power from 600-1600 ohms. I think the #1 price/performance amp for the T1's would be the stock Bottlehead Crack. IMO.

+1 on the amplification...as always it's the chain.  The T1's tryin' to do it's part, lol !!!

Yea that must be the issue with T1's. I mean, DT880 has a 600 ohm impedance accross the frequency range, but T1's is gong up and down like crazy, and goes over 1,5k in the bass region.  Now, while HDP can deliver 80 mW into 600 ohm, I don't know how much it delivers into 1,5k ohms...probably like 5 mW judging by how fast its power output falls with the increase of load impedance.

I was thinking about a Bottlehead, but I'm probably gonna get one of these soon:

Apparently, it rocks with the T1's and according to people who tested it, sounds better than WA6 with the T1's and HD800's. Cheapest model is like 500$, and most expensive 650$, so its kinda like Woo Audio, but the factory is a couple of kilometers away from where I live, so I'm not having to pay import tax, shipping costs, etc.

I have to hear it first, but its built by a very well respected  ex-DIY'er from my country who builds some unbelievably good sounding tube speaker amps, so I have all the reasons to believe his headphone amps sound great as well.

I have reviews of the One and Two, but not the Three yet.

+1 on the impedance stuff. Also HDP sucks imo.

Yeah I originally heard the T1's on a Yulong D100 MK11 DAC/amp which I previously owned, which is somewhat comparable I think to the HDP.  The difference between that and how the T1's sound thru my current Lyr/Bifrost setup (plus some great 1967 Mullard CV4109 tubes!) is night and day.

I have a lot of music, all lossless. I have pretty much all the "audiophile" cd's and records which are by audiophile consensus considered well recorded, but most of them still sound rubbish on T1's, worse than with many other headphones.  Binaural stuff just sounds wrong mostly, more spacious, but totally robbed of all dynamics, detail and clarity, to me they sound like a badly set up dolby headphone plug in.

So, if you had a task to impress someone who's never heard T1's before, which record would you put on? Which song would you let them hear first?

lol, I'm thinking maybe these aren't the headphones for you if NOTHING sounds good...just a hunch

Right, it's not always volume, not even power too, sometimes; signature also play a part on end result sound. HDP is bright, and T1 is also tend to be 'bright' (depending on the amp driving them), not a good marriage, IMO.

I imagine T1 and WA2 (tend to be on the smoother and darker side) will be excellent match.

I just realised what the T1s sound like - they are really similar to the B&O BeoLab 1 speakers. They sound great all the time, but are able to hit a sweet spot on certain tracks and sound truly epic. Can't wait to upgrade my Crack (adding Speedball) and DAC soon and see what these puppies are really capable of.

What DAC?

I cant wait to build my Crack and Speedball. I also have tons of upgrades ready as well. Tons of fun ahead!

Current leader is probably the Matrix X-Sabre. I'm doing a thorough comparison review soon including:

  • Cambridge DacMagic Plus (I don't expect this to compete, but open to being surprised)
  • Matrix Quattro DAC
  • Matrix X-Sabre

My current DAC is the Audio-gd NFB-5.2 so I'll be comparing to that. My only complaint of the NFB-5.2 is a slight sense of harshness or raspiness in the high frequencies. Originally I wasn't considering going above $1000, but the X-Sabre has really caught my attention from what I've read.

I can't recommend the Crack enough with the T1s (and I don't even have my Speedball installed yet).

My current favoured tubes are a brand new Genalex Gold Lion ECC82 (in place of the stock 12AU7) and a GE 6AS7GA in place of the stock 6080 (no mods required for either tube)

I love them, I haven't found a song that I don't like when I use the pairing. They kick the HD650's ass! I will be trying the HD800 this weekend because I want to get them next.  I am hoping that the HD800 will be in the same league
