Sorry, owned the DT880/600s alongside the T1s (still own them) and when both are properly powered, the DT880s are the brighter/thinner/more brittle sounding headphone. I always considered the DT880s brighter than the HD800s as well (I found the T1s warmer than both). What amp / source are you feeding them?

I am as well. The DT880.. dark? I think not! If anything the T1 is darker as it has a lot more bass. The DT880 is a lot brighter and has a more recessed midrange in comparison.

^^ What he said. smile.gif

What are your early thoughts so far? What DAC/Amp are you using with them?

I've used my Benchmark DAC 1 PRE by itself and to my Cary SLI-80. I'm still forming an opinion but so far so good.

HOly hell, that Cary piece is beautiful!!  I've heard great things about the Benchmark DAC, as well...looks like those T1s found a great home.

Indeed. I wouldn't be surprised if they will be his overall favorite headphone since his gear is up to snuff L3000.gif

His integrated was on my shortlist, but I chose the Yamaha A-S2000 because I didnt want to worry about maintaining the tubes for the next 20 years, and it provides alot more power for greater speaker options in the future. That said, I know he has some "quality watts" hands down.

Absolutely...even though the sonics are the most important thing, I"m a sucker for gear that looks great, as well. Cary is a perfect example of that...I would love to hear the T1s on that system.

We'll see about bias then :P STAX are very nice though and my feelings sure wouldn't be hurt lol. They are a different beast compared to "normal" headphones and really only compare similarly to orthos however...

Just got my T1s (5689) - brilliant phones. I just need to upgrade my other kit now confused_face.gif. Pioneer PD-S901 >> Benchmark DAC1 HDR >> Burson HA160 or tube h/p amp. of unknown make (DIY design?). The tube amp. is definitely the best sounding, but not resolving detail as much as I'd like, plus the bass is soft and underwhelming.... The Burson sounded great with my HD650s. Any suggestions for good interconnects not costing an arm and a leg - someone suggested the Transparent Audio Music Link. Maybe the CD transport needs to be better as well? I have loads of CDs, so these are my main source.

Little mini review here, just my thoughts after the first several hours of listening. I'll go into more detail with the flagship round-up I'm doing later in July.

I'm still standing behind my previous statements regarding the T1, despite many views on this forum that it is "light years" or "leaps and bounds" better than the DT880, in my experience that just isn't the case. It IS an improvement; it is more resolving, transparent, and has better imaging. These are smaller evolutionary refinements however, not revolutionary advances. The differences between the two Beyers are less pronounced than the gulf separating the HD800s and 600s, for example. Also, I have a criticism, they are brighter and less forgiving of mediocre recordings, and this can make them harsh for people who are sensitive to treble peaks (something these and the HD800s have in common), some judicious use of EQ takes care of that, though.

The bottom line: They don't have the resolution of the HD800s. They aren't as refined and transparent as the SR-007s. They don't have the unbridled energy and extension of the HE-6s. And they aren't as musical and soulful as the Fostex TH900s. However, they also don't have the massive equipment requirements of most of those, nor do they do poorly with anything in particular, barring the small excess of upper treble in some instances.

Ultimately, my overall impression is that I like them. All of those small tweaks and adjustments over the DT880s do add up. In fact, figuring them all together, they almost seem larger than the sum of their parts. Do all of them together equal one big improvement? That very well may be likely. It's a flagship that's a very good all-rounder, and that's just fine by me.

Thanks, I'm very fond of her. She's my "tube standard" and I've really gotten attached to its unique sound signature.

^ ido find that as a downside.

just as most flagships, they are very revealing. its not as obvious as with the hd 800s, but like them, they do make music lacking dynamics/overly compressed recordings sound flat, bright, and harsh.

I can believe it....just a beautiful piece of gear.

Your thoughts on the T1s are very well thought-out and articulate...good read.

Yep, just as I thought he would. The T1s don't make large sacrifices in other areas to be the best in another. That is why they are so enjoyable/listenable :) I mean, who can argue with a great all-rounder?
