The Official Beyerdynamic T1 Impressions and Discussion Thread - Page 699

Mine sound great out of my Master-11, but would love to use them in balanced mode because of the increase in volume and, well, because all the chicks love balanced headphones right?

Bought a Garage Polaris recently for when I didn't want to wait for tube warm up and short sessions. Never tired my T1's with it thinking it just wouldn't do them justice. Pleasantly surprised to find out I was wrong. T1's sound pretty stellar from the Polaris, I prefer my tube amp, but for short sessions its been a pretty capable amp.

Looking for recommendations for a specialised company or fellow Head-Fi member - based in the EU - to have my T1 modded and have a Black Dragon V2 cable reterminated for it.

Have been eying on this one https://customcans.co.uk/s/s/index.php/beyerdynamic-t1-modifications.html

Also, in your opinion what would be the best way and type of (interchangeable) connection for the T1 and to what result?

Thank you

Mini-XLR is what I've used for removable cable mods on my T1 & DT-990.  Never tried the Black Dragon cable so can't comment about it.  I usually use Mogomi, Canare and Cardas cables which I've found to be sonically the same as my Forza and Double-Helix cables at 1/5 the price, but this is just me.

Thank you, much appreciated. Couldn't resist a very good deal on a lengthy Black Dragon so I took it. Very happy with the T1 I think it's worth to have it modded for connectors and experiment with that. If general consensus is mini-XLR the ideal standard for the T1 I'll go with that. Thanks again.

You wouldn't happen to have any experience with the UK CustomCans guys or know anyone who to trust my beloved T1's with?

Sorry, I'm in the US and haven't dealt with any custom modders.  I have talked with PETEREK (has a thread on all of his custom mods) and he has provided me with much valuable info for modding.

Doing the mini-XLR mod is not the easiest but if you feel like getting your feet wet with DIY its a nice place to start.

The mods on that thread look great, however I don't intend to screw up my cans even if it looks easy, I know my boundaries and like the T1's.

@all: Still open to any suggestions for companies in the EU to perform cable mods on the T1

My T1 [#1376] started to sound relatively harsh and sibilant over the past 3 months or so and my ears start to fatigue after barely an hour =[  Which is really disappointing since the reason I loved them so much is because they were the most lush sounding headphones I've ever listened to and I could normally do 6hrs+ of listening without any fatigue.

I've notice the earpads' puffiness have reduced heaps (they're at like 50% of their original volume). Also, the cable on one side has gotten hard and is cracking revealing the wire and the headband is starting to fall apart. These have been my main can's for nearly 7 years so I think its time for some renovation.

I have washed the pads twice since I received the cans, which made a huge difference to the appearance and volume but the leather that holds them to the cups are tearing so  I've ordered some new DT990 pads and the headband from the Custom One Pro. Will be trimming off the hardened and cracking part of the cable and re-soldering, keeping the original cable since its high quality. Might also add some housing and driver dampening to get rid of the harshness and sibilance and to bring the sound closer to the T1.2, if the pad's alone aren't enough to bring it back to it's original glory. Will let you guys know how it goes.

Pic I took when I first got em:

Using a Yulong D100 DAC-AMP to drive them:

New headband cover, ear-pads and trimmed down the hardened cable. Haven't done the dampening mods just yet, want to get my ears used to the sound with the new pads first.

Initial impressions are that the sound signature has reverted back to its classic T1 sound. The harshness is gone and so is the associated fatigue. The original expansive soundstage has also returned. The sibilance is almost gone. Some dampening should improve this - will try the westone true fit driver dampening mod down the track and report back.
I cleaned the earcups and cable in hot soapy water. The newer section of un-weathered cable feels so soft and compliant that it feels as if I've gotten a recable!

The headphones look, feel and sound new again! 7 years young.
