SR60-Mod - Page 306

Some might remember reading my post a short while ago regarding not receiving the proper shells from Bilavideo. Shortly after posting of my experience, I got a PM from Bill offering to make it right. I decided to take him up on his offer and felt it best to go ahead and remove my post for the time being. I’m writing now to report that I did indeed receive the proper shells in the end (just a short six months after payment was sent). While I’m pleased with how they sound (most important to me) I feel I should note that one of the outer shells arrived split from the gimbal hole to its edge and that neither shell is symmetrical to itself or one another (not as important to me but still disappointing nonetheless). Please make of my experience what you will. Below are some pics of said shells installed on my headphones with grills of my own making and the black rod locks that Wayne (wje) was kind enough to send me (Thanks again Wayne!):

He said my cups were sent on the 10th. Judging from his previous cups it would take 7 days. I don't think he sent it.

On another note, I've taken my headband to a leathersmith around the corner. Chose the leather I want in Full grain leather and I'll receive a qoute tomorrow.

I did this but the guy failed me and i had to leave, please update with photos whenever you can biggrin.gif

They look pretty good actually, that's a sweet looking pair of cans (: Glad to know you're liking the sound, and glad that there are reassuring stories over here. Myself personally I've got a pair of cans to tide me over while I wait, and I'm sure Bill will make (or already has made) good on his end of the deal sooner or later (more likely later) so I'm fine, but I sincerely hope that the rest of you out there will have your problems solved asap.

How do the jumbos sound, by the way?

They are amazing with cocobolo and a ten hole mod!

After extensive testing with multiple sets of drivers over a lengthy period of time, I’ve now determined that the Dyanmat pole piece mod is counterproductive when used with fully liberated drivers and cocobolo shells.

It's used by the MSPro/RS1 if I'm not wrong (which feature fully liberated drivers), did you cover the venting holes of the driver by any chance?

No I did not, I found the jumbos required all ten holes to be open in order for the frequency response to remain balanced.

Interesting find Big Bill. I think it's the first time I've read about a relation between non damping and 10 hole/Jumbo combo.

Besides FR, what else do you find about it, namely headstage and detail/clarity? I wouldn't sacrifice detail over headstage, but if I could get more headstage and keep a tight bass with clarity/detail it would be just amazing I guess - PS1000 territory?

I understand that, what I meant were the holes on the magnet plate, pardon the confusion. They aren't supposed to make any audible difference but then again neither do the dampers.. Also, your venting of all 10 holes makes sense, given what the jumbos have been rumoured to do to the bass of any Grado they're put on. I personally have had to reopen some of my driver holes to compensate for my bowl pads.

No, I did not cover the voice coil venting holes in any of my experiments.

Hate to beat a dead horse but The shells I received from him always had shoddy holes for the cables to go through. I mentioned it to him but I guess they are still coming out the same. He must have some awkward shaped drill bits. My bits drill perfect holes.

hmmmm. Making me want some jumbos bill. I don't care for the sound with the hd414 pads which move the driver further from my ear, but I don't know how the jumbos compare, I imagine there is quite the difference.. total love hate relationship with this hobby. I'm trying to build a computer, but I keep buying audio equipment, or things to modify with :)

-edit- I got some fantastic advice on the Desktop. Many thanks to BossBorot and sidel :)

P.S. if anyone around here is familiar with building desktop rigs PM me. I have a parts list all selected and could use any advice anyone can give :)

I build overclocking desktops all of the time and am currently building two for friends who just graduated college. Send me a pm with your intended uses of the rig, size concerns, budget, current parts you are looking at, if you live near a microcenter or not, and info on if newegg taxes your state.
