I can confirm this,I've just taken the comfies off and the musical detail  becomes allot more more dynamic  .The very fact that removing the pads increase volume significantly proves the pads are dampening allot of the sound .And as you suggest they use bowls in higher models .

Time to Mod some nice holes in these pads :-)

Got my hf2 cups this morning from the local guy I mentioned before. They look great and im glad to finally have these back together. I lost my paper that i made to help with wiring them. Im not sure if ther wires on on the correct contact but it seems to be fine.

looking at the friver with the contact at 6 oclock, where does the red/blue and white/blue wires go? Now i have blues both solderdd to the left side contact and the red/white soldered to the right contacts. Is this correct

Pictures later of the cups.

Your correct on your test results.. When I moved from my quarter modded comfies to the l-Cush I lost a small amount of bass but it opened more clarity that I had missed before. The separation in sound increased in a positive way. Not to overwhelming I might add so it was a small move in the right direction.....

A mod I like to call the half dollar mod.. It just involved removing more material and putting them on regularly. I prefer this pad as far as comfies go. They do put a bit more pressure on the outer ear though, it seems.

I'm not one to stay on topic.. What do you guys think of this ring? I have to decide if I want to keep it or not. I really, really like it and it matches my dress watch (two tone). But, I can't decide if it is a bit too fancy for daily wear or not. Those are 12 small diamonds in the face, it really catches light like no other. I suppose the real question is... Does it go with my Grado's? :P

I want headphones that are analytical with separation and soundstage (the opposite of the Grado signature). I like having very different headphones. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxMkIm5JxkM <-- stuff like this very complex with a lot of background detail. It does sound good on Grados but I want to experience the music from a different angle? Do you get what I'm saying I want to hear the things that aren't emphasized with the Grados.

I  can understand your what your saying. I plugged in a couple of senn's with my Grado's at the same time. What gets you on this track you suggested is when everything comes at once then yeah it gets crowded. But when switching cans I still found the sound of the Grados better for the reason that I really enjoy the sound of instruments and when I can hear the tap of a symbol on it's own or when you can almost feel within a song the guitar pick hitting the strings then I get all warm a fuzzy on the inside.

I'll be honest, all the tracks I found online for this song were encoded at to high of a Bit rate so to me it was too bright. The you tube vid was way off as well on the recording so neither headphone played well at all.

But I think you will end up with a couple of cans to meet all of your music needs. For my music choices the Grados are by far the best in home and I have a portable can that works well at isolating outside noise while warming my ears with great music.

Get the other cans and see what happens, you never know..

Definitely mod. You will hear that increase in bass that you are striving for... Remove that cloth on the driver, and quarter mod the pads for sure (actually, i prefer more of like a half dollar or larger cut out.. I take away all the material that covers up anything. Then, your next stage will be poking the holes and adding dynamat. I'd poke the holes two at at time (it'll be easy to get them apart once you do it once). I'm up to 7 on my pair. Electronic music, well, all music really sounds better with the increased bass response.. It just adds an oomph, not muddiness. The dynamat helps clean it up a bit, but i wouldn't wait until i had dynamat to start punching holes. I really like where my grado's are sitting right now for all music types.

I forgot to add in replacing the grille, this one is easy and a no-brainer as well. All it can do is improve the sound and looks. I'd go without a grille before i'd leave the stock one in for long. However, I do commend you on your self control to not mod right away.. I had mine taken apart 15 minutes after receiving them.

My self control didn't last much longer than that .I've also taken away all the material that covers anything and a improvement is very noticeable.I'm sure I do the other mods eventually .

Well I was comparing there bass to HD25's & M50's which are closed so will naturally deliver more bass oomph .But the comparison was merely a observation. The Grado's deliver a satisfying bass sound and after listening with closed headphones for a while are  a refreshing change .

Here they are. The guy did a great job on them. The walls on the inside are pretty thick compared to the stock wood shell grado makes.

Just control your impulse to dive in all at once. If your seeking the actual change in sound then you should proceed with each step and do a serious sound session. This way you can appreciate the change but also stop when you feel you found your nervana........

The guy is going to create an account here so he can be contacted for work if you want. I would recommend him for sure. Second time he has done cups for me. Both times they came out very nice.
